I saw Slacktone playing live @ Angi Pub (Trento - Italy) 4 or 5 years ago...That show changed my life, I started to play surf-guitar...I used to play in a rock 'n' roll band, but now I'm so in that I can't quit...
p.s. When are Slacktone come to Europe again?

Keep an eye on the web site.
They were supposed to do Northern Europe a few months ago, but it got canceled.
I am seeing them tonight in a small bar, playing 3 sets, for free, and
there will be about 50 to 80 people there. But only 5 to 10 surf fans.
go figure huh?

welcome to the forum Pede. You're not alone in your admiration of Slacktone here.
Dave Wronski spent a lot of time and effort developing his sound and it's not merely a combination of effects. Start here to get a sense of what's involved.

I just saw Slacktone last weekend, Dave was using a Jim Dunlop Tremolo pedal, Reverb tank and an Echoplex. He also has switches on the board , i assume to turn off the Echoplex but it could be a hyperdrive or warp speed switch. Sometimes I've seen a Memory Man on his board. Still has Graphtech Saddles on his Jag. He also has that little box on his strap which I believe boosts his signal. The Slacktone amp was set on 2 all night. Just a casual observation.

Hi Pede, I use a Colorsound Tremolo mostly to just get a Vox style machine gun trem effect on the last chord of a song. I use a tube Echoplex, or, sometimes when on tour, a Memory Man with true bypass switching. I usually use a Fender Reverb Unit along with the reverb in my "Slacktone Amp" which is wired to sound like a Fender Reverb Unit.
I remember the Angi Pub in Italy! Great fun gig! Thanks ~ dave

I don't know when we'll be in europe again. There has been difficulty trying to arrange this for the past two years. I miss it very much, and hope to return. ~ d

I thought it was a Dunlop but I would take this guy's word for it.
That is one cool sounding tremolo by the way.

"Slacktone is widely recognized as America's best surf instrumental band..."
this expression writes on their website. Is that right or not? I listened to them on youtube, in my opinion; ok their sound is strong and they are so good band but in fact I don't think Slacktone is America's best surf instrumental band. My candidates of Best Living American Surf Band;
Los Straitjackets
Satan's Pilgrims,
Man or Astro-man?
Longboard Ranch
The Phantom Surfers
well, what about folks about this?

all depends on what kind of surf you like, I Guess.
I love some bands you mentioned
and laugh at others, and some are just OK

You resurrected a five year old thread to say that?
Los Straitjackets aren't a surf band, and the other bands aren't really active.
MoAM? and Satan's Pilgrims are two of my favorites. No arguments there! Satan's Pilgrims being one of the great live bands of any genre.
You need to check out the Surf Coasters, Madeira, Space Cossacks, Nebulas, Bambi Molesters, Pollo Del Mar, Tomorrowmen, Secret Samurai.

Just because it is said somewhere on the web doesn't mean it is true. From a point of ethnomusicology it isn't surf music. Because something isn't surf music, isn't a slight to the music. It is just part of a different instrumental sub-genre.
Separating surf from instrumental surf rock isn't the easiest thing to write out. Reverb is a huge factor, but the biggest factor is playing style. Surf music has some very distinct techniques. Those techniques are used in other instrumental music, but they aren't used in the same way they are used in surf music.
I've heard a lot of things get called surf music in my days here, and Los Straitjackets are not at the extreme and I can see why they would be lumped with surf. They are a band in the same vein as The Ventures. They write and perform guitar instrumentals. It just isn't the same as surf music. I'm not trying to knock their music or musical ability, but I'm sure they wouldn't want to be categorized as a surf band, same with the Ventures.
