Through my journey searching for surf, and instrumental guitar music, this name keeps popping up. He played the 'Bonanza' theme amongst many other 60's TV /film tunes featuring instrumental guitar. Has snyone rlse heard of him or got interesting info on him and his music.

oh yes , he was a first call session player in the 50s and 60s ,played on thousands of recordings . The Bonanza theme was a huge hit along with the theme from Magnificent Seven ...these were pop versions of the original themes from the series and movie .
He also did tons of easy listening guitar records ,. I probably have half a dozen of them.

Hi ArabSpring
Thanks for that. He has a cross between Duane Eddy and the Shadows. Amazing to think someone who played on so many well known themes is relatively unknown.

His spy theme records are good.

"Underwater Chase" by him is my favourite underwater spy theme Smile

Of course it's alive, you cannot make music with dead Muppahones! -- Marvin Suggs

What are the Spy albums? And any other suggestions of albums you guys like featuring him?

Possibly 'unknown' might be a generational thing. IIRC he's one of those that didn't make the move to the west coast but was extremely respected by his peers. Wonderful touch. Seem to recall he passed away last month.

I literally grew up on Al. His version of Experiment in Terror was the theme song for Chiller Theater in Pittsburgh. I heard it every Saturday night for as long as I can remember.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Maybe it is generational. I stumbled across him recently and had never heard him mentioned before, ever. And that's 30 years of reading all sorts of guitar stuff. When I saw all his credits I realized I had heard him my whole life not knowing it was one guy!

Great album, I got aware of him when I started listening to soundtrack & library music back in the 90's.

Just like Noel! Heard his version of "Experiment In Terror " every week as the theme to "Chiller Theater." It's one of the big reasons that I play the kind of music all of us here dig today!!!

So glad you mentioned that. It was a staple wayyyy out in Van Nuys when I was a youngster. Seem to recall it was Saturday nights at 8:30pm, which in the summer sometimes curtailed outdoor stuff 'cause we played till it was past dark (or someone really got hurt, whichever came first). Who'd a thunk 50 years later I'd be musing about this in an Al Caiola thread?

I have an old LP from my dad where Al plays the theme from Bonanza plus schmaltzed-up versions of 11 other intro hits from the late 50's and early 60's, including Apache, Ram-Bunk-Shush, and Hearts of Stone. They were the first versions of these tunes that I heard as a kid. His playing is first-rate and the guitar sounds are cool, but the orchestral backings on some of the tracks are a little too "old showbiz" for me now. Still, probably one of the reasons I keyed into the guitar in the first place.

I was exposed to Al Caiola from a very early age, without being aware who it was. See attached video. The opening titles used an edited version of "Big Noise from Winnetka".
Years later, when I heard the tune in a party, I tracked down what it was and it started my downward-spiral into library music. From that I discovered more of his tunes such as "Underwater Chase" mentioned above.

Thanks for this list! You certainly know your stuff and obviously so did he with everything he's played on! I am definitely going to explore more of his playing.
You realize how pervasive the sound of surf/instrumental guitar was then in all types of music!

That list is amazing. "Galveston" is one of the best guitar solos of all time!
