Permalink Best Classic Instrumental and Surf Albums

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Following on from my question on the Ventures, posted earlier, can you guys suggest maybe the best complete instrumental surf albums by the early classic groups that you like or feel are worth listening to and important if you want to get a good taste of the origins of surf music etc?

Also any good early instruemntal bands albums, that maybe were more like a Shadows and not doing just the surf style, but still instrumental?

I know there seems to be heaps of new bands and originals nowdays, but at the moment I am intersted in hearing the stuff that created it all.

Looking forward to your suggestions and listening to them.

Just off the top of my head with AM coffee I would strongly suggest the following:

The NSSR Top Lists that can be found here. Songs and albums that have been getting voted on by members here & around the globe for years.

John Blair's extraordinary discography, available here. It needs to be on your shelf. Especially since many of the great songs from the classic era were never released on "albums" at the time but as singles, only found on later remasters or compilations.

Have fun. Cool

Dick Dale, The Belairs, Eddie & The Showmen, The Lively Ones, The Original Surfaris, The Surfaris, The Chantays, The Astronauts, The Pyramids, ...

There are lots of good (probably hard to find now) compilations of obscure 60's stuff: Surf Creature, Toes on the Nose come to mind immediately.

Sundazed had the Lost Legends of Surf Guitar series of albums which are worth checking out.

A few years ago this compilation came out of the blue with a bunch of very rare and obscure stuff... even came with a booklet... Surf Age Nuggets: Trash & Twang Instrumentals.

Listen to the NSSR classic countdown for a great overview.

Check out the Atlantics' "Now It's Stompin' Time" (though their other two '60s albums are good, too: "Bombora" and "The Explosive Sound of...").

Also, check out the Jokers from Belgium, they had several albums out in the '60s - I particularly like "Go Discotheque". The Outlaws from the UK, their one album "Dream of the West" was Joe Meek's answer to the Shadows. The Spotnicks from Sweden had a bunch of cool albums in the '60s, "In London", "in Paris", "In Spain", "In Stockholm". Two more great '60s Aussie instro bands: the Denvermen "Let's Go Surfside" (VERY Shadows-y) and the Joy Boys "The Surfin' Stompin' Joys". Finally, Los Relampagos from Spain had several great albums out in the '60s.

TONS of comps out there of UK and Western European Shadows-influenced instrumental bands, in particular from northwestern Europe, lots of Finnish ('rautalanka') and Scandinavian bands in that style.

Good luck with the hunt!

I highly recommend the Birth Of Surf Volumes 1, 2, & 3 on CD.
Pre-surf/origins and cool stuff from the golden era are included.
I love the Lively Ones, Dick Dale, The Astronauts, Eddie and The Showmen, Fender IV and the Original Surfaris. The late 50s instros from those like Duane Eddy and Link Wray are essential listening, too.
The Ventures and Shadows played a big part in early instro music but they are not something I refer to often.

I think Surfin' with the Astronauts is a must have, along with the Revels' Intoxica, the Dick Dale reissues on Sundazed, Bustin' Surfboards by the Tornados, and the early Link Wray releases on Epic and Swan. For fuzz, see Sundazed for Davie Allan and the Arrows.

Yeah, that's a great one (I've got Clovis Classics). The Fireballs are in the gotta-have.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for these posts and suggestions. I a really appreciate the effort and passion. I only joined a few weeks ago but have gotten so much good information. Incredible. I am off to listen.

By the way I am in Australia have checked out the North Sea radio long ago but always miss the Poll shows. I can't see it on there but are there podcasts of these shows or are they all only live?

For licensing reasons, there are no podcasts of NSSR shows. This year's Classic Surf and Surf Revival Top 101 countdowns go out tomorrow (December 18th). Visit the NSSR website for more details.

The countdown plays, then repeats later.

Duane Eddy - Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel
started it all for me as a kid.
I was already playing guitar but this album blew my mind and still does, especially the tone and sound of the guitar and record.
If you can find a copy in mono vinyl....bliss!

Cheers,
Jeff

Wow, we're on same page on this one. There are several out on the net in VG condition for not much; I should snag one of these 'cause I really dig this guy. I wonder how many people besides you & Eddie Bertrand he sunk hooks into. That would be a long list, sir.

Yes, this record has the same effect on me as my Dano/Silvertone guitars.
I can't look at them or see a picture of them without wanting to play them, LOL.

Duane Eddy's LPs seem shy on the bass, and so do many other vinyl albums of the day. I suppose this was because juke boxes and typical home hifi units boosted bass enormously. Things have changed, the expectation for music recording reproduction now seems to be for flat frequency response. When I listen to Duane Eddy's vinyl albums I have to boost bass a lot for the sound to seem balanced.

Not surf but essential nonetheless. Many surf first wave surf bands covered these tunes

Hi Badger. Greatly appreciated I will check those suggestions out...

Yep! Those two Freddy King lps are must have. We do several of his tunes in live shows, just crank the verb some. You might check out Wes Dakus & The Rebels stuff too. Not surf but some fun stuff.
