Hi Guys
I have the first two Ventures albums and recently got a compilation of some of their other material. But to be honest it sounds mostly like muzak covering beatles etc, sprinkled with a few original surf and instrumental classics.
Can anyone suggestion maybe the best four or five albums of theirs to check out and listen to for straight ahead instrumental stuff that best represents them? I mean as a quartet without strings and backing vocals..
I know, like the Shadows, that at times these groups ventured into more popular more muzak type stuff. I am mainly interested in their early classic stuff. I did look on the net but they have so many albums out it is confusing to know where to start. I would be interested in what others have found good to listen to.

Phil,
The first Walk, Don't Run album, The Fabulous Ventures album, Ventures on Stage, Ventures in Space, Don't Run '64 Album, the "Surfing" album.
That's six.. should get you familiar with the Ventures pretty quick.
A bit of self-reflection.. I can play most of the material on these albums. Hmmm... Well, it kept me off the streets...

Thanks Johnny. That's fantastic. Is the Surfing Album a name for the Walk Don't Run 64 album?
Or did u means it's called the Surfing Album?

Three of my favorites. Do understand that The Ventures are not a surf band and never claimed to be. They are an instrumental rock band that primarily "instrumental-ized" radio hits of the day with a few original songs sprinkled in the mix.

The Ventures Live in Japan is a favorite of mine. The playing on that is mind boggling.

Rooting through these early albums is worth it for some of the original gems you'll find. Yeah, some of it is banal to the point of being unlistenable to guys like us, but the high points are very high. Funny these Ventures threads are popping up, because that's what I've been letting run on my iPod in the evenings while we get the kids ready for bed, and I'm finding a lot that I'd missed before or forgotten. In addition to Woody's suggestions above I've had fun with 'GO...' and 'Twist...' lately.
And search the forums for PLENTY of references to 'The Ventures In Space.' It is rightly hailed as one of the most important albums in instrumental rock history.

Agreed, and this earlier release is excellent as well. MUCH higher energy here than on their studio recordings. Nokie's guitar tone is to die for as well.

I believe "Live In Japan" is the full recordings from which "On Stage" was created. I prefer "Live In Japan" since "On Stage" has a loop of a screaming audience (not the actual audience that was there), probably to appeal to Beatlemania type fans. Once I noticed the loop and catch on to where it starts and ends it began to drive me nuts, so much so that I never listen to this one anymore, since "Live in Japan" was released.

My all time favourite Ventures album is definitely (The) Ventures in Space from 1963. Great songs all the way through, loads of reverb and weird vocals and effects. Love the weirdness and space-age feel of it.

Ted, I'm no Ventures expert, but I don't believe that is correct - I think the only connection between the two recordings is the year, '65. I've read that "On Stage" was actually recorded in some warehouse in the US without any audience, which was subsequently dubbed on there, whereas "Live in Japan" is most certainly a live recording. But I completely agree about the applause loops, very irritating" "Live in Japan" is a MUCH better release!

Love The Lonely Bull LP. The original pressing sounds incredible. I just found a copy of Surfing a couple weeks ago and have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Ventures in Space is another one I find quite good and well recorded. All of these comments refer to the vinyl versions.

Makes sense. I also like "GO! with The Ventures", "Batman" and most all of them up through the late 60s.

On Stage is a completely fake live album. Some of the same tracks are on the Ventures From the Vaults albums sans audience loops, but with the stage anouncements! They sound very studio-like.

Philjudd,
Sorry - I typed a bit too fast. It's the SURFING album - pictured by a few on this thread and WALK,DON'T RUN 64 ALBUM - which has Don Wilson's wife pictured.
It's a well known fact that Live on Stage is actually a studio recording..I've read that Don Wilson even admitted it. But it is still a great record. They used Guyatone amps with their Mosrites. The closest I've been able to nail that sound is with a 1980's Yamaha Solidstate amp- a GB-100,I think and, most recently, a Bedrock BC-75.
Your ears wills eventually notice the "Fender" sound and a Mosrite sound. the Mosrite is a bit edgier, a bit more raw -- my kind of guitar sound.
And - check out the Ventures fest that happens every October in
Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania. Bob Spalding of the Ventures usually shows up. You can check outs ome clips of it on youtube channel TAB11BALT11.
Hope all this helps...

The tracks from The Ventures' studio-recorded "live" ON STAGE album are available without the dubbed-on audience noise on Volumes 4 & 5 of the VENTURES IN THE VAULTS compilations of rarities and unissued recordings. These are totally legal releases from Ace Records in the UK and are available from mainstream dealers.

rmany many of the surfing albums weren t relased.
However there was a single record taken from the "Surfing" album and renemed from "Laguna Surf Party" in Surfparty in lagune".
I will try to add the foto of the label as an upload.
In my ebook there are 172 pages of German vinyl releases of the 60s (mostly) with cover, labels and fotos.
There are lots of book covers, articles, fotos etc some 600 reproductions and maybe 450 pages in word 2007 and excel.
All chapters are finished but I am still not content with the outcome dur to computer technical problems of my pc.
So far I have given away only 13 cd to friends and people who had helped me...
The upload wasn´t done ...I will keep on trying!
