My band is playing Tailspin in our set, and while I can sort of play it (on bass), I'm definitely not happy with it. I'm having a heck of a time a) making sure I have it right and b) if so, playing it smoothly. I'm confident on the chords and root notes. It sounds to me like during the basic rhythm of the verse it is: A-E-F#-A. Then B-F#-Ab-B. But the fingering on that, at that tempo, seems like it can't be the way he plays it. Even if he plays up nearer to the nut to take advantage of the open A, what about the B? Like I say, I can fake it and make it sound okay, but I want to play it as correctly as possible.
Any bass insights anyone can provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

There's a number of YouTube videos of them playing that song. Maybe you'll get lucky and get a clear shot of the bass player fingering it.

My son plays bass and we have played this together a few times. I showed him what i heard on the recording. Turns out the bass tabs that Number9 posted are what I showed my son. My ear isn't completely turned into tin yet.

It probably doesn't help that we play it at a ridiculously fast tempo.

Yeah, Dave, we do play it at a pretty brisk pace. I figured you'd probably see this post! I'll work on it for practice Saturday.

Hey Awful,
The main riff is AACE, which just shifts up a whole step to BBDF#.
Try playing it using the same fingering (1143) starting on the E string 5th fret. It's actually a very good finger exercise to build strength in the pinky.
Number 9 did a great job on the tab, but the first note of the phrase is actually doubled. So instead of ACE, it's AACE. And IMHO, once that pinky stretch has strength, it's easier to play it fretted (as above) than open.

Thanks! I was actually practicing last night with those first notes doubled. It sounds that way on the recording, and it's actually easier for me to keep in time playing all 8th notes like that.
I didn't realize there was a walking line during the longer walk downs. I thought he was playing the same sort of rhythm when it goes from A to G to F to E. But the walking line sounds good, so I'll use that.
All of this information is extremely helpful and I really appreciate it! I love this song and want to play it as close to 'right' as I'm able.
