We've finally finished our first CD (oh, you'd like to hear it? how flattering! here it is...)
It's a 6 song EP comes in around 23 minutes. My question is how much to charge for hard copies? I'm thinking either $5 or $10. If I go for cheaper, then what do I charge for downloads? (I suppose I could do $8, but who wants to make change.)
I'm resistant to the whole "can't charge real money for music" thing, as I happily plunk down $15 most of the time for music at shows. But since it's short, and our first album, I'm not sure where to go pricewise.
what do you charge?

I've seen a few bands selling cd eps, for 5 dollars recently.
And they were selling really well.

I think EPs for $5 and LPs for $10. That's what The Mystery Men? do, and honestly, what I usually expect to pay. It's worked well for us.

That seems reasonable for a six song thing. what do you do for download? I have it up on bandcamp, the default is $1/track, though maybe I can do $1 for individual tracks and $5 for the whole thing...

Same price for downloads... $1/song, $5/EP (which is physically out of print) and $10/Full-length (which is ALMOST out of print). Pretty standard stuff it seems. Our distribution is all through CD Baby, but we also have Bandcamp... both serve us well. Digital sales are so great because of the low overhead.

those are fair prices that i don't mind paying. when it gets up to $15 i start to think twice about making a purchase.

$5 it shall be. And I'm going to do a free download for SG101 members; would it be easier to do it "email me and get a code" style or just make it pay what you want for a couple weeks?
thanks gang!

Definitely pay what you want! I think you'll be surprised by that outcome.

Make sure you use the opportunity to set up sales and attendance in the future.

I'd definitely go with $5 for a CD-EP. Also, definitely look into a credit card swiper (Paypal or Square) - that helps sales a lot these days.

Not going to answer to CD pricing but I will say that is a pretty killer set of tracks yall have there!! I have always had a soft spot for 4 or 5 piece bands that have a restrained Hammond type organ in the mix.

I don't by much anymore, but $5.00 for the EPA sounds like a very good deal.
BTW I listened to your tracks at the band camp site.
You have a pretty good sound.

Thanks for the kind words gang. I love the farfisa too; my keyboard player moved, but I still get him occasionally!
