Maybe some of what you are reading is disrespect, or maybe your just mistaking it for people just being passoniate for what they like(and that goes both ways). But Jeff, just from rereading through this post I see nothing disrespectful, so iI dunno where you're coming from.

Not to throw my own hat into this, but I think Jeff's referring more to a particular mentality that, while fairly absent from SG101, thrived on another list a few months back.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Bill
sorry I must be ass u me ing again. I have a bad knack of doing that. My Bad. I appologize if I seemed like I was attacking you.

But Warren is kinda right. But it comes more from some surf fans I know in the LA/OC area that really piss me off about not liking the
some of the Prog surf stuff. They like the Insect Surfers.
But won't watch the Surf Kings/Mermen/Pollo Del Mar, Aqua Velvets
etc... Just makes me want to spit.
I don't know why I let stuff like that bug me. but it does.

I think we are all EXTREMLEY careful here not to insult anyone!

well, goddamit Bill, first you're making fun of people's hair, and now you are calling me an oversensitive treehugging sissy hippie!? wassup with that?

They are illegal in all of Europe, except for Lichtenstein.

Insulted or offended?? no,

But sometimes the people that are into Trad. only, come off as very disrespectful (IMO) towrds any kinda surf sound/or look that isn't 100%Trad.

Like Bill, I too don't like progressive surf rock but think I should be able to mention that without anyone getting upset. I wouldn't have a problem with someone saying they don't like trad surf or find it narrow-minded.

Jake, dude, I'm from the Netherlands, we have legalized abortion, euthanasia, smoking pot, prostitution and jaywalking.

i think we could get away with a grille cloth bikini even if I was wearing it.

BTD, anyone

passion's the greatest thing

but really, imagine a world where everyone was nice, friendly, beautiful, non agrresive, and liked quality food, good music and great novels and no TV.

imagine a world full of only perfect people

sounds like hell to me.

if there's one thing I appreciate more than anything else in this world, on all levels, it's diversity. And that necessary includes all the assholes, fuckfaces, dumb-asses, ugly bitches and the black eyed peas. love life, love 'em all, that's my motto.

off the soapbox,

... and to get somewhat back on topic ... it's not just the clothes that are important but also how you wear your face. Of all the bands i saw live, i remember the balboas, coffin daggers and big ray and the futuras as just plain ultra-cool. the nebulas, esp TFJ and Dan, radiate intensity. Ferenc and Jono I remember as laid back.

I 'm just talking about body language and facial expressions here.

I on the other hand am notorious - always have been in other bands too - for making ridiculous faces. I made peace with myself over this, but sweet lord, a face like mine ain't always a blessing. .. Wink

here's the proof

Oh, we've all got cases of "stageface" in my band. Case in point...

Ha! facial expressions, something most people don't think about. Nothing bothers me more than the Eric Clapton I'm about to blow a load in my pants if I hold this note any longer look. John Mayer's got that look pretty bad.

Sometimes it's the little things that count. Vintage style straps, and some form of brylcreem, or hairdress. That's if your going for a more traditional look. Smile

Well, Clapton didn't invent those! Watch Dick Dale on Sullivan - he's doing it back then! I've seen the Atlantics sporting some of those expressions, too... I think it's fine to look cool with a neutral expression on your face when you're playing 'cool' surf - surf that simmers rather than boils over. But how can you play DD, the Atlantics, the Fender IV, Messina, Eddie & the Showmen type stuff and not have some sort of an intense face?

I'm trying to not make them, but sometimes in the heat of the moment... there it goes. I agree that Mayer is almost unwatchable because of this, though. And yet all the girls dig him, go figure...

Bill, I beg you - don't try to emulate that!! I love the trad stuff, but from today's perspective those hairstyles are beyond gay! There's just no way to wear THAT and be cool in any way, shape or form... Don't go there, brutha! Wink

The guy on the left looks like he's wearing a hat.

My band has a long way to go in order to have similar hairstyles (or to play shows that would require us to adopt uniforms, for that matter). I think I'm the only one of us who owns a comb.

Is it really necessary to quote the Trashmen pic 4 times on the same page? I mean, if we are gonna repeat pics, please repeat the Laura pics from the Monotones...!

I am not digging the guy on the right side of the above photo.

On a side note, my hair has come back in somewhat curly and lighter since the chemo.
