In a new video announcing the guitar, Townshend explains that he’s been a fan of Stratocasters since childhood, when he saw the U.K. guitar instrumental group the Shadows perform. Shadows guitarists Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch were both Strat players.
“I just remember thinking it’s a perfectly proportioned, beautifully balanced design in every respect,” Townshend says. “And then when you pick one up to hold it, you know that thing about it being contoured to the body? It really is.”

So, how many UK guitar heroes have mostly been - or at least recently become - Strat players? Besides now Townshend: Knopfler (red signature Strat), Gilmour (red Strat used all through the '80s), Beck, Clapton, Blackmore, I think even Peter Green has mostly played a Strat in the past decade or so. Pretty amazing.

Passed or extant? Some would disagree about including Ireland in "UK" but I think Rory Gallagher certainly qualifies, whose influence on selection was Buddy Holly. As Beck said, with a Strat no one's going to walk up to you and say "why don't you get rid of that old-fashioned guitar."

To paraphrase from a book I read in the early 70s (Hendrix by Chris Welch) Coming up to the mid 1960s (GB) it was thought the Stratocaster sound was too weedy for Brit Rock ...until Jimi Hendrix stepped out on the scene in 1966. I think that is probably true, if you search for photos pre 1966 most of the aforementioned musicians were using Telecasters, Gibsons and other makes.

Interesting he threw a transducer on there, although totally understandable given his bent. One of my Strats is so breathy that it's just (currently) my go-to noodle-around unplugged guitar.
