Permalink Surf Strum patterns

I know there are typical surf drumming patterns but what about surf STRUM patterns? I'd like to know what are the most common surf strum patterns (in terms of down/upstrokes) and how they match with drumming...(note: I can't figure out strum patterns by just listening to records)

Welcome to SG101!
Be patient, there are some world-class players here (and it's a Friday).

I agree that it can be hard to pick out the strum patterns. It's easier for me to learn the lead by ear than the strums. Very interested to hear what others will have to say. Here are some I use often.

This one is really useful. The only really important part are the accents on the 1, 2& and 4. You can play around that and find many patterns.
D u d D u d D u
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

Note the downstroke accent on the 2&. You could use an upstroke too depending how the song feels. I find getting the hang of playing the accented 2& with either a downstroke or an upstroke to have been one of the most useful surf rhythm guitar skill I have. You could also use the same accent pattern with just downstrokes.

The following one is a pretty starting point for me. You can play around alot with this one by adding a rake on the 2& going into the 3. I like to add left hand percussive mutes to this one (can't get the "code block" to work, the -'s are just there for the spacing):
D - D U - U D -
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

I use this one and variations of for Atlantics' style strumming and gallops:
D duD duD duD du
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

Can't underestimate the ska pattern. Fender IV used it alot.

El Camello's patterns are all great. Thanks for that input!

Try listening to only the drums in a lot of surf tracks you are trying to play. That's what you want to play along with. Ignore the lead guitar until you get the pattern in your head. Also, break up the song into sections. Bite sized chunks are easier to digest Cool

A lot of surf drums hit the snare on the "2& 4" beats (meaning a hit on the 2, a hit on the "&" between the 2 and 3, and a hit on the 4). Miserlou and Hava Nagila rhythm patterns are basically heavy strums on those hits.

1&2&3&4&

Some guitarists throw a strum on the 1 as well. Sometimes I'll hit the 1, rake the 2, quick strum up then mute the 2&, then hit the 4 (either up or down stroke). I do that to break up the song a little and keep it more insteresting.

Dick Dale's Surfbeat is the same, but they hit on the "1& 3" beats instead of the 2& 4.

"The Gallop" is also used a lot. El Camillo posted it above. I'm just repeating it because I think it's super important in the surf repertoire.
D duD duD duD du
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

I do this one a lot. It'll work with a lot of surf songs. I do variations on the accents or rakes will skip a strum. This one works with songs like Bullwinkle pt 2 (with a rake on the 2).

I hope this helps!
