Yesterday I found this on youtube and finally confirm my theory that playing Surf music seems easy, but it is not. With all my respect to Andy Timmons (a virtuoso guitarist), you need to have something more than being a good guitar player , a reverb tank and a showman to make it well. He is really far from achieving something that sounds like surf music (the tone is awful !!), and the band is better for progressive metal than to emulate the Ventures (it's amazing how lost and lacking of groove they are in Slaughter on 10th avenue), the cover of the Beatles is fully out of place and style, and the last song (an original composition i guess) is closer to Joe Satriani that Dick Dale .... If this man wanted to do traditional Surf,he should listen more old records, and if he wants to make modern surfing, should ask Dave Wronski how to do it ..... a shame!

Never heard of him.
First and foremost, the audio quality is shit and I guarantee most of us are listening on shitty speakers.
Most surf bands sound this bad on audience shot videos.
It kind of sucks. He is a good player, his band plays well.

Bet this is how he envisioned and wanted it to be. The only thing he could of tried harder to do is please the members of SG101 with better tone and less embellishment. I also bet he things what he is doing sounds exactly like Dick Dale.

I've heard worse. Andy is a tremendous guitar player so I'll give him props for the effort. That's an Ibanez Talman he's playing.

It may not exactly be my thing, but kudos to guys like Andy Timmons (and Gary Hoey) for having the courage and audacity to play "that weird music with no singing". They are pros making a living playing instrumental music that they love. More power to them. Anybody of this stature bringing surf to the attention of people who would not otherwise hear it is, to me, a very good thing. I really liked their version of "I Saw Her Standing There". Andy and his band did an all instrumental album of "Sgt Pepper", and I think they pulled it off quite well.

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd be willing to bet that his guitar is probably strung with 09s or 10s, whatever he uses on his regular shredder guitars.
If he were to string his Talman with 11s or 12s, that would pretty much force him to slow down, to one extent or another.
Back in the late 90s or early 00s, I saw Gary Hoey play with Dick Dale, and it was kind of the same deal, although I'd have to say Hoey's playing was at least a little bit more old school.

obviously I'll never be a tenth of the player that Andy Timmons is; that being said I did not enjoy that in the slightest.
It's at least as bad as when shredders play "the blues".
The notes are there but it's just a costume he's trying on for fun.
Nothing wrong with that but it's not my cup of tea at all.

Well,
It's way better than listening to some cover band "slaughter" the vocals in I saw her standing there.
I'm pretty much a trad guy but any instro is better than no instro. I kinda liked it. Maybe a few people in the crowd were entertained enough to seek out more instrumental madness, I think that's a good thing.

Actually, I liked it. He's using the Talman I'm currently saving up for and his guitar player has the model I just recently sold. Mine was blue sparkle and definitely better looking. Liked his tone and attack. Too aggressive?? No, just his interpretation of the material. I get bored with players that try to nail the record's tone and note placement. If you want to hear something played exactly like the record---- get a record player. My hat's off to Mr. Timmons!
