Need opinions, experiences, etc.

Thx

We do, no regrets.

Yes, and a sax too if possible.

I think Laika and the Cosmonauts have it right, 1/2 guitar 1/2 keys

I'd definetely keep an open mind to it. A couple of years ago I was in a band in which one of our guitarists also played pedal steel. Needless to say, it killed on 'Sleepwalk'.
Back in the 90s, there was a Surf Band from Seattle called 'The Deep End'. (Maybe Jake might know something about them.) They had two bassists, one platooned on Rhythym guitar, the other platooned on keyboards. I have their cd; it was pretty good.

I have been very happy having a keyboard in my band. I like the different colors and textures. Also, I don't have to play lead all the time.

I know Joe who was in the Deep End, now in Banzai Surf. The Deep End was too long ago for me, I was 11 when they formed! They then became Django Twango and now Banzai Surf.

Thanks, Jake.
My sister came across their cd and ordered it for me several years ago. I could be wrong, but it sounds as if Joe may have used a Marshall, or something like that- the guitar sound seems to have that closed back midrange 'thunk'. Kinda cool.
One of the bassists used a Ricky, so with that, the guitar tone, and the keyboards, they sounded kinda like Deep Purple, playing Surf Music.
Thanks again, Clark

Personally, I'd take keys over a second guitar.

Going against the grain.. I would really not want a keyboard in my band. I will admit that the occasional organ done tastefully could be fun but I would just not want that sound often enough to have a dedicated member. Same issue I would see for sax... would be fun for a solo in a song but I wouldn't want that in in every song. I would consider it for a recording or if it was a guitar player that could double when required.

EDIT: I do like plenty of bands with sax and/or keyboards.

Absolutely! Of course at this point, I'll take anything I can get as I'm having a hell of a time trying to put a band together. A quest I've been trying to achieve for ten years. Now about that kazoo player...

Either you surf, or you fight.

I wouldn't take anything for our keyboard player. He has helped define our sound. If anything, I only wish he was a multi instrumentalist, as there are times I wish he could pick up 2nd guitar.

THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary.

As a listener, even if not an integral part of a band's sound, IMHO a keyboard can add a lot to a live show. Filling in spaces, creating crescendos and wild entertaining sounds. Doesn't have to make sense, either. No need to stick to the usual 60's organs, even MIDI guitar can be a lot of fun.
Treat it like a stage prop, a dressing. Out to an external reverb unit of course, it will sound cheesy and nuts.

it's making a comeback!

Depends on your band's sound and goals. If you are a cover band playing older style surf, keys can help. If your original band wants the additional texture of keys great. Personally, I'm not a fan of keys and sax in our original surf bands (we did play some covers). When I was with Reverb Galaxy we brought a saxophone in; it sounded great and added some nice change of pace. But, we had to find songs to keep him busy and involved. Eventually we found that audiences started classifying us more as an "oldies" band (right or wrong) instead of surf. We played with a keyboardist one gig, then that was it. He tried to play on every song and it just didn't work.

I think if you can find a keyboardist who is a multi-instrumentalist (percussion, sax, etc...) then it might work.

We're extremely fortunate. One of our members plays tenor, baritone sax, keys, trumpet and bass when I play guitar on a few tunes.

That sounds like a great addition to the band Cool

We would dig having someone on keys quite a bit.
I'm always writing for expanded instrumentation and often we have to re-arrange a song to make it work without organ, strings, horns etc.
Things I hear in my head when writing.
The capability to have sustained tones or chords and textures other than guitar excites me.
I'm not as much of a fan of keys in a surf band with just one sound or tone.
If a band has something like a Farfisa or other organ and only that sound and that sound is too busy or overused I get fatigued quickly.

Cheers,
Jeff

Just a few weeks ago, I saw a keytar in action at a very cool (and strange) fundraiser for my son's elementary school. Gary Wright (the "Dreamweaver" guy) backed by the Stone Temple Pilots. First one I'd seen in years!
