Trad isn't just for surf!

I know there are a couple of people on here that dig ska. I'm a big fan of the first wave, trad, 60s, Jamaican ska (whatever name you want to give it). One of the good local bands, The Hi-Lites, is going on tour very soon and have some new tunes on their My Space.

Why post this band? Because, the first time I saw this band (little did I know), Scott from Monsters from Mars was part of the band, playing sax I believe.

What about Trad Jazz?

Louis Armstrong, Bix Biederbecke, Billy Holiday, Benny Goodman, etc...

That's what I'm talking about. Thumbs Up

Yes! I love jazz too. Did you watch the whole Ken Burns thing on PBS? I thought it was pretty neat.

Interestingly enough, many of the original ska band members came from the Alpha Boys School in Jamaica where they were trained to play jazz music.

Did see the Burns series on dutch tv, great stuff. Really enjoyed that.
All early music has something special IMO. Freshness, power.
Early deltablues, 50s rockabilly, 60s garage punk, 60s british blues, ska, Trojan reggae.

Do you have any of the Trojan boxsets? I'm a huge fan of these. I have several and you can't beat the 50 songs for under $20.

I have a box of Trojans somewhere...

and I always hope and pray the work "skank" doesn't come up when I reach for it.

Dear god, I'm loopy. Bill and epic papers make for some interesting thought patterns.

Bill, you are just full of punny jokes, aren't you?

hmm, I'm curious what you're writing about now!

I am writing an examination of Robert Herrick's blurred messages of affection between romantic love and religious fervor. Basically, Herrick is a Cavalier poet, so he's all about wantin' some and gettin' some, but he uses similar language and imagery of desire in his religious lyrics.

But to bring this back to trad ska, I am currently listening to my boys Hepcat. "Scientific" is one of my all-time favorite ska albums of any wave.

I did not see the word "funk" used. That's good.

Cool...everytime someone brings up Hepcat, I keep thinking about the Heptones.

Be wary of geek mode - I know of people who are irreparably stuck there.

-outsides-

Aw, don't you worry, I am well aware of when I'm switched on. Generally, it seems to be connected with me wearing my glasses -- kind of like a Clark Kent thing.
