Thank you Danny Snyder. She obviously has a good sense of humor, also (wearing the beard and the rest of the Meshugga outfit). I live in the Bay Area, and somehow I haven't been able to see you and all your different bands perform. Hopefully I'll see you this year.

Hmmm, can't believe that nobody mentioned all-female bands like the Trashwomen and the 5.6.7.8.'s.
I saw a new, all female surfband on facebook last week, but can't remember their name

I agree with Jetpack but also want to throw in that one of the nice things about instro is how irrelevant gender, race, sexual orientation, soda preference etc is to the sonic result. I love how egoless surf can be, which makes it kinda weird to me to play "spot the female"

I'm sorry my opening topic was so poorly written. I don't mind the criticism. I see Jetpack's points. But when you start calling me weird, and say I'm playing "spot the female" I have to stop you. Don't you ever wonder about the people behind the music you like? Are you telling me that none of those women mentioned sound like they're worth listening to? These women are very interesting and inspiring, especially to new aspiring women musicians. Anyone interested in Ladies of Surf, now have some great references, thanks to everyone who mentioned them.

Fortunately for Karen, she hung up her beard years ago. By all means come out to a show and introduce yourself. Meshugga Beach party are playing April 21 at Forbidden Island, and The TomorrowMen are playing with The Blair/Pongracic band (and 2 other garage-y bands) on June 24 at Winters in Pacifica.

Does all of the above apply to female vocalists? In surf bands? I'm sure we are all seeking clarity.

A comment above spoke about how surf is a very welcoming and equal genre. To me, that seems true. But ask a woman that and you are going to receive a drastically different answer.
Surfrajettes, just read the comments on their instagram. Way less about the music and way more about gender and looks. They don't deserve that, they put a lot of effort into getting as good as they are and are trying a lot harder than most surf bands to have successful gigs(they aren't doing the play three sets as background music for $500 thing). They are playing gigs/bars for a pittance just so they can get more and more people to come out and see them and to listen to the music that they love.
Men, ask women what they feel sometimes about how they are treated. It may seem well and balanced from where you sit but you are going to learn some startling shit when you ask that question. And I don't just mean from shit they've had to put up with playing music.

I misread the title and expected this to be about a Scottish surf band, The Laddies of Surf Music...This is why I always get arrested in Scotland, I keep misreading the symbol for the female toilets as a man in a kilt.
I don't charge for the extra humour.

I edited the original topic to clarify what I was after. I didn't know I could edit the topic until I wrote to the webmaster, today.
