Permalink Instrumental wisdom from Kyrgyzstan!

New Topic

I just got finished watching a 2004 documentary on nomadic-based music of Kyrgyzstan ('Tengir-Too', comes as a bonus dvd in the cd package of the same name), and wanted to share an especially inspiring quote from the disc !! Kyrgyzstan is a central Asian country situated roughly inbetween Russia and China.
One 'Nurok Abdrakhamov' is a maker and player of the 'komuz', a lute-like instrument. He has this to say:
"Instrumental music starts where the expressive power of words ends. Words have a limit. They can describe thoughts up to a point. After that, there are other feelings that we can express only with music. This means that music is more important than verbal traditions. Instrumental music is the highest expression of the Kyrgyz soul" . So, of course, just substitute 'Krygyz' with 'SG101' !!!
Go Nurok!

That's great Dave, insightful - thanks for sharing that.

Kyrgyzstan - that's in the neighborhood of Squinkistan, but Not as far out there!

Squink Out!

Is this related to Tuvan throat singing?

...it's not quite related to Tuvan throat singing but some of their bowed instruments are similar!
