This may have already been posted. But I never thought disco and surf could be combined... very interesting.

Interesting.

It kind of reminds of the whole "Hooked on...." craze that was happening in maybe the late 70s? Hooked on Classics, Hooked on Country.

Yeah Kiss did a disco album, The Stones did a few disco jams too. But The Shadows? I had no idea!

Ventures did a Disco album.

This version doesn't suck.

The video, is an abomination. I'd rather look at Ted Cruz' face than watch this video. (I hope that doesn't come off as political, I merely cannot look at his face and his being a politician doesn't enhance his genetic hideousness).

This is both awesome and disgusting at the same time...

Some wide brush strokes on the disco label me thinks.
Riders in the sky isn't really a surf song ( written in 1948) but they really Discoized it in the video.

KISS never did a disco album. Dynasty had one discoish song on it and the rest where rockers. Not stirring the pot, but as a lifelong ACE Frehley fan I had to throw in my 2 cents...

Thumbs Up

I am not obsolete, I am RETRO.... Cool

Kiss didn't do an entire album, but their song "I was made for loving you" might qualify as disco? My heart will go on by Los Straightjackets is also a possibility.

Happy Sunsets!

At least Hank hasn't done a hip hop version! —

Either you surf, or you fight.

Ethel Merman did a disco album.

Maybe they were just trying to cash in on the success of Tommy Seebach's version of Apache

An 80s Hip Hop version would be awesome.

Lets not forget this one

The Shadows 'went disco', at least to some extent in '79 and '80 on two albums in particular:

They were trying to keep up with the times, but they kept the disco influence under control and actually IMHO "Change of Address" is their last good album - I listen to that one a great deal to this day. Neither album is a 'disco album', they just incorporated that sound into a few songs. Here are a couple of other ones where you can hear the disco influence that actually I quite like!! (For the disco part, go to 2:17 in Hello Mr. W.A.M.)

I love the Shadows, but I am always curious about what Hank would have done today. Clearly, the Shadows attempted to make really pleasing instrumentals that appealed to a wide audience. What if he went artistic? Just layering the living daylights out of guitars, more complex beats, and more minor keys. Like dark minor keys...

We don't, to my knowledge, have anybody making guitar based instrumental music in a non-established/non-retro/non-post rock genre. Ratatat maybe, but their guitar isn't 100% the forefront/you don't know it is guitar.

Anyways, just some rambling! Gonna go listen to Blue Star.

Jake, there is ONE Shadows album that sort of a did that: 1973's "Rockin' with Curly Leads". Definitely not to the extent you probably have in mind, but it was certainly an 'artistic' endeavor to the max rather than an attempt to be commercial. The Shadows broke up in '68, after which Hank and Bruce formed Marvin, Welch & Farrar in '70, lasting until '73, trying to find a new audience with a vocal approach reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash. They released two fantastic albums (and one good album as just Marvin & Farrar) which were complete commercial flops. So in '73 they went back to the Shadows but now with John Farrar on the second lead guitar, releasing an album that had only two covers (The Who's "Pinball Wizard/See Me Feel Me" and the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations", both REALLY cool version, methinks!), the rest all originals. I think it's an absolutely amazing album. Farrar was a phenomenal lead guitarist in the '60s/'70s country-rock style, Clarence-White-kinda stuff with a B-Bender-equipped Tele, and there are multiple songs where Hank and Farrar are trading improvised solos back and forth which is just fantastic. Hank also uses a bunch of Maestro pedals and effects through the album, fuzz, phaser, etc. I hipped Jonpaul onto this album, and he absolutely loves it! Check it out!
