Permalink Do you think there's much difference between a Silvertone 1448, 1449, and 1457?

I played a Silvertone 1448 that I love. I then read up on the 1449 and 1457. It seems that they're almost the same guitars with an extra pickup and longer neck. Do you think if I like the 1448, I'd like the 1449 and 1457 even more?

I have all three of those guitars and I've got to say that the 1448 is more of a specialty guitar to me, for writing or hotel rooms, maybe playing with a singer songwriter.
The 1457 and 1449 feel more like real guitars to me with their full scale and second pickup and I use those a lot more for all kinds of music.
Some folks love that short scale on the 1448 though and only you can decide what you like more.

Cheers,
Jeff

The 1448 is too short for me. Dex Romweber made some fantastic music on a 1448 though.

The 1457 can usually be had for a cheaper price than the 1449 as to I believe there were more of those made.

I went through a phase when I was collecting those and found some with 1 5/8 nut widths and some with 1 3/4 nut widths.

Yeah, he sure did, didn't he?

The 1449 was made in 1963 only.

That's weird isn't it Bill?
My best sounding of the bunch is a 1457 with the 1 3/4" nut
my 1449 has the 1 5/8

Do you still have any of yours?

Jeff

Interesting thread. Making headway through Bob Dalley's book and it's amazing, almost a requirement - that someone's first HS or even Jr. High guitar (and amp) when their parents realized that acoustic nylon-string thing from Aunt Jenny wouldn't cut it - was a Silvertone. Gets mentioned almost as much as Fender. Americana.

My first guitar was a Silverstone (1963) I had it a month and the neck came unglued. I took it back and bought a used early 50's Epiphone Century. It's neck pulled loose.

I didn't have another hollow body guitar for 50 years.

I can hold a grudge with he best of them.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

I remember seeing one of those amp-in-case things at a Sear's (if recalling correctly) but wouldn't have been close on money at that age. Had just gotten Mom convinced to spend the money on a real set of 'Connies' & those were spendy enough (for us) as sneakers go.

Now I want a 1448. Didn't realize the scale difference- I thought it was just the single pickup and black paintjob. I will resist. Really, this time I really really will.

No I sold them all. They are kind of hipster bait right now and I got offers I couldn't refusue.

The coolest Dano I had was a 4021. That I sorta miss.
