Permalink Moment of Truth MP3 ?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Does anyone know where I can find an MP3 of “Moment of Truth” or does their band do it, and can let me listen to a version of it ?

(I have to play it, which is always a little more difficult when you have never heard it……..)

Thanks,

Pineapple Geoff

I suggest you buy the "Hangin' Twenty" album which has the original version:

Sorry Klas, this is the Dave Myers version (that most people cover), but not the original version, which is by The Original Surfaris.

Ooops, I should have known that... Anyway, I believe the Original Surfaris version is quite hard to get hold of today so the Dave Myers take should be the second best to go for.

Klas, you are right about the availability, the Dave Myers version popped up on all the Del Fi surf comps in the 90s. But it pays to try to get the original - studio and live versions (they are pretty different), so if someone covers it, it doesn't become a "cover of a cover" (like what happens with Hava Nagila where everyone is covering Dick Dale's version which is not the whole song)...

Back to moment of truth - Big Tiki Dude has the album with both Original Surfaris versions, I forget which one is it. He also has the Surf Teens album which has a version which is not bad.
Other, more modern versions, that I remember off hand:
J & TNR
The Finks
The Eliminators
The Apemen (one of the best versions IMHO)
The Astroglides (good luck finding that Laughing )

Dave Myers' version is better, anyway. The Original Surfaris were still kinda rough back when they recorded that - not nearly as good as when they did Bombora.

I think the only time the Original Surfaris' version of Moment of Truth appeared on CD was on Sundazed' reissue of a sixties comp "Surfs Up! at Banzai-Pipeline". I searched Amazon and Sundazed and it's not showing up on either site. Well, Amazon has a listing for it, but it has no info:

I didn't know there were both a studio and a live version of the song by the Original Surfaris? I know there are two different mixes of it though. I have it on the 1963 "Surf's Up" vinyl album which has different mixes (louder lead guitar) than the track wise almost identical "Surf's Up At Banzai Pipeline" comp reissued by Sundazed. The former has never been reissued and the latter is out of print since several years.

Here's what Phil Dirt have to say on the differences between the two comps I mentioned above. Both includes "Moment Of Truth" by the Original Surfaris.

This is the Northridge Records version of this comp is reissued on CD, and it's in mono. There was also a version on Reprise, which had some different tracks, and which they remastered/remixed in mono differently from the stereo masters which must be somewhere (argh!). I wanna know when the stereo masters are gonna surface on CD! The hard core surf tracks here are wonderful. This is essentially a companion album to Surf War.

image

Reprise licensed this album from Northridge, but didn't use all the masters, and messed with the track sequencing. Added here, but not on the Northridge release, are the Original Surfaris "Surf's Up" and "Pipeline," and the Coast Continentals' "Banzai Pipeline" (not the Henry Mancini tune). Missing from the Northridge package are Bob Vaught and the Renegaids' "San Onofre" and Bob Hafner's "Surf Creature." The mono mixes of the Original Surfaris tracks are balanced with the lead in prominence, unlike the Northridge version.

The live version is more elaborate...the studio version is what the Apemen covered. The live version has the solo that Dave Myers did at his version - it's in the 3rd quarter of the song more or less.

We'll have to wait until Jeff comes back from work and ask him to look at the album - I don't have it, I asked him to dig it up for me so I can make sure I'm covering all the parts of the original songs in my band (becuase someone, whose name I'll leave out, told me that I'm not playing the melody, but he was wrong).

P.S. to me The Original Surfaris are one of the top 5 bands in the first wave...just because their songs kicked ass!

Thanks for that !

I'd only ever heard of the Dave Myer's version !

I'm sorry Ran, i don't follow, what are you asking me, Or what am I supposed to be looking for???

I'm asking you the name of the album (or albums) that has the studio version and the live version of "Moment of Truth" performed by The Original Surfaris. I'm referring to the album you played me a few months ago when I came over to your place.

I hope the question is clear now...
Thanks,

Many thanks !

Always a whole lot easier when you've heard it !

Now we just got to do it justice...........

I believe the Bootleg LP of the Original Surfaris Ran is asking about is called "Surfari". It compiles a bunch of songs that aren't on
the Sundazed cd. I guess they never did a real lp back in the 60's just a few singles, and apperances on a bunch of compilation records.
Be nice if Sundazed would do a revised comp, with all the tracks they recorded.

That's true, Jeff. My impression is that the Sundazed CD was actually the album that was supposed to be released in the sixties but somehow never was. That's why it doesn't have most of the singles and comp tracks on it.

The LP that you're referring to was released on Domenic Priore's (unnamed?) bootleg label in the nineties. I have it and it's very good - much better than the Sundazed CD (which is pretty weak IMHO). It collects EVERYTHING the Original Surfaris actually released in the sixties, so all the comp tracks and singles. For the uninitiated, Priore is one of the guys behind the Dumb Angel books/magazines.

Be nice if Sundazed would do a revised comp, with all the tracks they recorded.

Amen, brother! Given that they already released that one CD, releasing the collected works of the Original Surfaris would be the logical next step. My guess is that given that their tracks appeared on many different comps, securing the rights may be very difficult and/or costly. But that would be one hell of a CD!

That's it, another one is "Big Surf" on ACE if I'm not mistaken.

The Scimitars

There's a really nice version of "Moment of Truth" by Al Garcia & the Rhythm Kings on their CD '63-'64:Exotic & Rockin' Instros. And I think nobody has mentioned The Elimnators on Unleashed.

The Surfteens version is very enigmatic to me.
