He is all over Facebook. But he doesn't seem to be very responsive to people on there. I would throw the question on his wall and see what happens.

Well, I don't really know, but I know how my buddy used to do it in the punk band he had in high school; a bridge humbucker on a solid body guitar into a Boss DS-1 and some amp. I would caution against getting too caught up in nailing it from the recording and just chase the sound in your head. You get as close as you can, and after that it's all about you selling it.
The friend I refer to is no longer on this plane, but if I remember correctly he taught me the very first song that anyone taught me how to play and played with me, which was 'Bloodstains' off of 'Living in Darkness.' His band covered it and because of that it was one of the first ten punk albums I ever bought. That it was "surf" punk and actually had some rodded up surf tunes on it was pure joy. I am actually getting to open for Agent Orange in a few weeks as a stand-in with a friend's band, and it wasn't until I got the word that I was getting to play that it struck me what a big deal that is for me personally.
Good luck in the quest, man.

Wow thats crazy Id be honored to even see Agent Orange live the surf stuff off living in darkness really peaked my interest for surf when i started playing guitar and when I started my current band one of the first and only covers we started playing was Bloodstains which is a personal favorite of mine. I play a gretsch duo jet so ive been trying different distortions and overdrives would love to know what he used though

One of my old bands played a show with Agent Orange back in 1987. If memory serves me correctly, the guitarist of Agent Orange was using a Gibson SG through a Marshall amp, either a JCM 800 or a JMP. Although dont quote me on that, it was a long time ago.

I'm probably wrong. But to me it sounds like there is a little bit of phase on some of the songs on Living in Darkness.

A Marshall in a box, you say???
Catalinbread dirty little secret is the first to come to mind. That's not on the cheaper side of things. But yes. There's lots of Marshall in a box variants out there.

MadScientist (Jamie) and I will be playing with El Capitan and The Band With No Name at The Earl in Atlanta on Feb 20th, opening up for Agent Orange. I'm pretty stoked.

He used single pickup SGs back in the day. Definitely Marshall 800 tightness. I think that chorus/phase thing was put on at the time of the mix in stereo. I think a chorus pedal on a mild, slow setting, after your 'Marshall-in-a-box' pedal would get you close. I would try an EHX small clone. The old Marshall Drivemasters are great for that tight, focused marshall thing..
One of my very favorite records.
