Permalink The 1976 Fender Precision Hotrod bass......Blue Moon

New Topic

Folks I work at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and I was recently listening to the 1954 version of Blue Moon by Elvis Presley. I was struck by the archaic 1954 recording with the spring reverb and thought to myself that really sounds kind of surfy. I decided to do my own recording on the 1976 Precision hotrod....here it is. Go easy on me if it is not your cup of tea.....this is the first in a series of classic tunes done in the surf style. Enjoy..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtl3FkyrEmU

Thats interesting and sounds good,
you show good arrangement skills and are original in
making a soloist surf bass song.
are you going to make a whole album like this ?
i like the maple necks too.

Thank you Palo......I am working on classic vocal tunes arranged for bass and guitar in the surf style but it will probably take a while. Blue Moon was my prototype experiment.....the Everly Brothers are next but the melody is much more difficult. I do prefer the maple necks and hope to build a custom Precision out of birds eye maple some day.

That's a fun project, you can make a cd collection.
do you play rhythm and lead guitar too?

I play with a guy named Craig who is quite good on the Stratocaster and he will provide the icing on the cake for The Everly Brothers All I Have to Do Is Dream. Chet Atkins is the guitarist on the 1958 version which is a great tremolo tone so the song translates perfectly to the surf style. I have a Leslie speaker which sounds amazing with a Fender plugged into it.

The Everly Brothers All I Have to Do Is Dream. Chet Atkins is the guitarist on the 1958 version

I didn't know chet played that thanks for that info.
good luck

OK....Palo and anyone else who is interested in this post. I am finally done with The Everly Brothers "All I Have to do is Dream" instrumental. This video features my partner in crime Craig Kap on Stratocaster going through a Leslie speaker.....I play the 1976 Fender Precision Hotrod and the drum parts. I cannot divulge all of my secrets as to how I achieved the sonic landscape of this song/video but I will say that I had to use a combination of analog and digital gear in order to reproduce the classic 50's sound of the Everly's version.....Chet Atkins nails that tremolo tone

here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLtyXvdO4fM

Good job on that video and music.
it's like a psychadelic dream.
