Permalink Any videos out there to drum like the true old schoolers?

You know when you see old drum videos and they drum like they're holding a knife and a fork almost? That's what I'm talking about. I'm not really a drummer but I like to mess around on my bandmates kit and wouldn't mind trying to get that style down but I can't find any videos on it....

Anyone out there willing to help a noob?

It's a bit more documentary/history than instructional/how-to, never the less you have to get a copy of Pounding Surf.

What you are describing is commonly called "traditional grip", as opposed to matched grip, which you mostly see today. There are dozens of youtube videos that explain it if you search accordingly. Many drum tutorials cover both grips depending on preference. Grip aside, after that the same techniques apply to the kit regardless of how (which style) you want to play.

Traditional grip is great and there is a certain old school feel and sound you can get. It takes a lot of practice to get your left or fork hand in shape and personally, it totally torque my hand into a cramped mess when I try to play loud and fast, so with 3 Showman amps cranked up, I go with matched grip. Check out Mel Taylor from the Ventures in any of the live in Japan 1965 videos to see him totally wail with trad grip! Respect to anyone out there that can hit hard and fast with trad grip.

Here are a few examples of it, if you want to take a closer look at the technique.

Check out anything with Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich - they play in that style, and many of the rock drummers from the 50s-70s were huge fans of theirs.

See if you can find any Boss Fink videos ,their drummer Len Curiel is amazing
...total old school Hal Blaine type technique ,trad grip ,just incredible. I cant stop watching him every time I see them play .Their guitarists are top notch too but I always watch the drummer.

Daniel Glass (Royal Crown Revue, Brian Setzer Orchestra, etc) did a video for Drumeo, specifically talking about the surf beat. I do believe there's a longer more in depth video, but this shows you some basics anyway, and interesting takes on where the beat could have originated from:
