The Soul Food is really good, right out of the box. It's the best band-for- the=buck out there. That said, I had mine modified by JHS, and is even better. It's a lot more versatile. It has the toggle switch for three clipping circuits: original Soul food, open clipping, and Germanium diode which is similar to a Klon. They also install a pot on the side that is a bass contour. For me, the $45.00 for the mod was well worth it.
45.00 makes the mod well worth it it sounds. How long did it take for them to turn it around. At this point living without it isn't an option for me. Would have to plan that one in the future.
Stratdancer, the JHS mod took between a week and 10 days, for mine. They have new, already modded, Soul Food pedals on the shelf for $115.00 that they could probably ship our the same day. Great video by the way! You guys sound great!

Thanks Rob! The soul food and all the other tone focusing equipment has really helped in the studio these days! I like the idea of getting this mod done. Seems hard to believe it can be improved but my Lovepedal Eternity had a diode selection mod done to it and it was really a nice addition. 10 days is not time at all!

I got a Soul Food last month, thanks for the suggestions. I have to spend more time with it but it's definitely a keeper.

I've got a Soul Food also, although I'm probably one of those who make very limited use of it. I'll keep it, however. What I was looking for was something that really only a harder-working output stage could give me. So I simply changed tubes to some that are (not sure if I'm putting this right) sucking up more plate-current and get to their "blooming" point earlier on the dial. The amp still has plenty of clean for recording that way or would be fine for indoor stuff, but the overall tone is much better (not distorted in the street-vernacular sense but full).
I had some good tubes in it (which are keepers in their own right), but am not in a situation to be turning the thing up to where it really starts to sing on its own. Now I can get to that point earlier on the dial; and the rounder tone actually made the Soul Food sound better, since I use it barely cracked open anyway. Sometimes adding a pedal isn't going to get what we're hearing in our head but maybe simply changing up what's already there will.

You know, I never bonded with the Soul Food but so many people like it perhaps I should give it another visit..?
Cheers,

Jeff, your first instincts were probably correct. I almost returned mine but I do get a particular sound (1) for some things I like. If it were gone tomorrow I wouldn't cry. You have some varied and famous ways of getting good garage tone and amp drive & bite so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Frankly I wish they'd made the treble control into a full-spectrum old-time "Tone" control rather than a just a cut. Too much use of it and (my $.02) it gets kinda nasally. Mine's actually at 12:00

It's great because it is $59. I don't really want to speak $150-$250 on transparent overdrive so the Soul Food works for it, and it works well. I like what it does the tone but it is no KTR or cheaper transparent OD like a Foxpedals Kingdom.

Just got a Joyo ultimate drive. Works really good as a clean boost if you leave the gain all the way down and just use the tone and level to adjust. Downside is that it has an audible click when you turn it on. Upside is that it costs $29.

The Soul Food is very nice sounding but the Klon, the pedal the SF is based on, sounds even better. The new KTR version is much more affordable than the Centaur. My current choice however is the EM Drive.
