The VI as well...

I have to admit that you have the most beautiful bass gear i have ever seen.

Aw shucks, you guys...

Yeah, I have to say that this CS Bass VI is about as perfect as craftsmanship comes. Since I started playing bass, I've always wanted a VI. I've played a couple of the MIJ Bass VIs and they just didn't sound right to me. When I heard that Fender was doing these VIs for '06, I started saving. Labella flats with the mute on and you've got quite a sound. It's on a couple of songs on our next album, I'll let you guys know which...

to be honest, its only alright. it better have a killer sound to back it up. i dont play bass, but if i did, i would never get one, i would stick strictly to 4 strings. but thats just me, im old school like that, haha.

do you play chords on it, or what? im assuming it has the same pitches as a normal 4 string, seeing the scale. what notes are the extra strings, is it just the same notes as a guitar, except down an octave?

i love your jazz basses though. they look the way a perfect bass should. too bad you cant hear 'em too well in the aquanauts recordings.

Matt's Showman has a lock on the volume. It won't go past 3.

You've pretty much got it, for the Bass VI. It's tuned E-A-D-G-B-E, but an octave lower than standard guitar tuning...hence the Bass VI name. Standard tuning for a 6-string bass is B-E-A-D-G-C, while the E-A-D-G-B-E tuning is an alternate 6-string tuning, so a 6-string bass could be used the same as a Bass VI. Gretsch made a 6-string bass that could be used both ways, depending how heavy or light it was strung.

Well, Josh, the Bass VI actually predates the Jaguar. I will play chords on it as a joke, but its strictly a plucking instrument. So I should say the Jaguar isn't "old school like that", but you'd never ever catch me stringing those four words together. Ever. Wink

Everything I own in this picture sounds excellent. After all, its Fender stuff.

Alex, the drummer, is a Recording Engineer/Producer and he does our records. I'll be happy to let him know that you think the bass is too low in the mix. In addition, we'll send you an incredibly bass-heavy mix of our next record just to make up for this folly. You can learn how to play bass guitar by zeroing in on my incredible sound and skill. It'll be tough, but you'll get it after 5 or 6 years. Then you'll get the bug for a Jazz Bass and a VI because you cannot get that infectious sound out of your head. Good luck sleeping the rest of your life... Laughing

Good thing I plan on getting a fender jazz bass soon. Jazz Bass players unite!

well, me saying "im old school like that" was pure sarcasm, although i didnt know that it predated the jag. instead of a bass heavy mix, just send me all of the bass tracks without the drums or guitar, im sure you sound better without them holding you back, anyways. i can probably get them down in a couple months instad of a few years, im actually a pretty good bass player, and i can do this on a bass: doodoodoodoodoododoodoodellydoodoo. pretty awesome, huh?

so going completely off topic here, but you guys are breaking up? that sucks, i would have loved to see you guys, but im afraid a road trip to chicago is hardly worth it, no matter how good the band is.

See, this is why I don't already have a Gomez G-Spring and haven't bought up some of the great gear that's been for sale here since I joined this community. Big Grin

In the spirit of not breeding forum topics like rabbits I'm reviving another old one. Remember last week when I was getting a steal of a deal on a Starcaster by Fender J-Bass? Well, the bass was already sold to someone else and I let her have it. Now I'm in the market for another bass, but as before, my budget is limited and I don't know basses.

To remind everyone, I'm not having luck finding anyone local dumb enough ...er, able to play surf music with. But I have access to my son's drum kit (he's in Montana for the summer), and with a bass, I can multitrack the three instruments myself. With the right recording equipment, I can even make a video of me playing all three instruments together on one tune. I'm not good enough to pull this off well, but it sounds like so much fun I've got to try it. I'll do Rumble.

So, bass players, and anyone else with an opinion, if your budget was limited (under $400.00 total new, $300.00 total used) for bass and amp, what would you get? The Squier Vintage Modified J and P basses are obvious, and so is the Fender Rumble 15 bass amp, but what else might I consider? Used is preferable, and less expensive. It doesn't have to be Fender.

Or, someone could help me buy a Gomez G-Spring by letting me play surf music with him. because then I wouldn't need to buy a bass, bass amp and multitrack audio/video recording equipment. And learn to play drums. Big Grin I just picked up a set of sticks a tried drumming Rumble. I have a lot to learn about drumming. Don't drummers have eight arms?

I've also thought about moving to where surf musicians live, but that wouldn't solve the original problem.

Help! Thanks.

For the price you cannot go wrong with the Squier Vintage Modified P Bass. I have played a few instruments from that line and they all seemed solid, no issues. You can always find inexpensive, used bass combos as well. Check Craigs list and your local shops.

Also check out the Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazz bass - I bought one on a whim without really needing it but have really grown attached to it - I think it's an outstanding value for the money!

I have an SWR LA10 combo amp that I use for practicing that I really like, but I've also used it at a couple of really small gigs and it held it's own. Looks like they've gone up in price since I bought mine several years ago - you might be able to get one for around $100 on ebay or craigslist. There's also a 15" 100 watt model available too (LA15).

I had one of those little Fender Rumble deals a while back, 25 watt...the one I bought got crushed on one side during shipping, but it still sounded pretty good. I wanna say I paid $160 for it at the time, but that was years ago...

If this stays reasonable, I'd recommend one of those.

I have the 100 watt version and it's my oldest piece of gear. I bought and sold two larger bass rigs in my bass playing life, and have always kept this, even after not playing bass in a band for over six years.

For cheap basses there are a ton of options, but the only stuff I'd say stay away from is the Squier Affinity line. I've had two, a P bass and a Strat, and both were trash. Other Squiers I've had have ranged from pretty good to great (for the money). I am assuming the cheaper part of your equation is going to be your bass.

I hadn't thought of that. Like a lot of people who are new guitar players, I bought a practice amp first and then bought a performance amp later. It's so loud I can't really use it at home unless the house is empty.

But I take your point to mean the amp is a bigger part of the bass sound than the bass. Maybe better put, a $150.00 bass played through a $250.00 amp will sound better than a $300.00 bass played through a $100.00 amp. Do I have that right? That makes a lot of sense. I'll have to mull that over.

I have a short list of basses and everyone has already recommended them, except for the Squier Classic Vibe 50s P-Bass. I guess for my purposes, the best advice is to avoid the Affinity basses. And, no one has said anything about the Starcaster by Fender I almost bought. No good or just no experience with them?

Feel free to keep 'em coming and thanks.

IIRC, the Starcaster is their Walmart line. I've got a Squier Standard Precision Special (P/J setup, J-Bass neck) that I'm considering getting rid of. We can talk, if you're interested. Your text to link here...

Amp-wise, the Peaveys tend to be all over the place on Craigslist. Loud, heavy, and in the $250 range. Bomb-proof, from what I've heard.

I feel your pain about not having anyone nearby. I'm in Maryland, just north of DC. (well....moving that way at the end of the month) Haven't really been able to find anyone down here either.

The 50s P bass is what I was referring to in my previous post. I got the name wrong. In any case I couldn't recommend it more. It is a tremendous value, sounds and looks great. It is pretty gig/jam worthy off of the shelf. A change of bridge, tuners and pickup would give you a pro level bass. If you can get one, do so.

Ideally, a 70s P-bass with the thin (A?) neck for me. However, I currently do not own such a model. Have only borrowed. Currently I play a 2006 American Jazz bass and I love it.
Other than that though, I'd say any bass without flatwound strings Big Grin
