Permalink The Halibuts, Let's Go Trippin, Davis, CA 1990's

The Halibuts were invited to play a convention for a bunch music executives up in Berkley, sometime in the '90's. This was a showcase where all these bands came up and told stories about how they were going to be "the next big thing." There was a lot of yawning, rolling eyes, ... We got to close the show. No talking, just playing. The execs went crazy. I wish you could see the dance area behind all the chairs. Eventually they started clearing out the chairs to open up space. Here's a version of Dick Dale's "Lets Go Trippin'"

This is fantastic!

cool Cool

Years ago, I bought 2 Halibuts and 2 Penetrators cd's not knowing that later on, I would be so glad to have them. Smile

This beats the hell out of some of the exercises corporates go through at meetings. Alcohol - Great Surf Band = cut loose. (And what happens at the event stays at the event - even for the lady watusi'ing her whatever off in the stage left shadows.)

Great vid - thanks for posting Brian. Big Grin

So what happened to The Halibuts? No longer active? Where were (are) they based?

They are sadly no longer active. I hope there is more footage like this that gets unearthed.

That's "Mr." Pete Curry on lead guitar, isn't it? What an awesome cut. +1 on hoping that some more footage like this pops up. I would think that more than just a single song from the performance would've been captured.

Rick Johnson said there is probably a lot more where this came from, as Mike Palm used to set up a video camera at most of the gigs he played with them. Let's hope it sees the light of day soon.

I get to be useful!
From the liner notes: 1993, Peter Curry, Randy Haskins, Rick Johnson, Kevin Daley, Bruce Paddy, Joe Lyou.
Recorded in and around Randy's garage.

Which album are you quoting from wfoguy?

I'll see if I can get Rick to chime in here.

Hey, Mike Palm (Agent Orange) was our bass player thru the mid 90's after Kevin retired. That's him in this clip.
I'll see if I can pressure him into some of the other footage. I want to see it too.

Big Grin Wow, Rick magically showed up! Thanks Rick! It would be wonderful if all this old footage could be put on a DVD or uploaded to YouTube.

I'm sure the Halibuts in the 80s n early 90s around South Bay, especially at Toes tavern was wild times.
Even their late 90s and a couple early
2000s gigs at the Picher House were epic.
Hundreds of people, 50 or so dancing.

Was wondering it that was Pete Curry. Knew him mostly as bass player for Los Straitjackets. Would occasionally play non-bass on an LS#, but had no idea he was that good(if that is him).

Yes that is Pete Curry. He also plays drums. I believe he played drums with Davie Allan for a time.

I've seen Pete play guitar, bass, and Druns, with the Torquays.
All at different gigs of course, sitting in for someone who couldn't make it. He also played keyboards for the legends of surf section of Deke Dickerson's Guitar Geek Fest, on year 3 or 4.
All around great musician.
