  2. The Wedge (Dick Dale)
  3. Surfari (The Original Surfaris)
  4. Ghastly Stomp (The Ghastly Ones)
  5. Sea of Glory (Los Twang Marvels)
  6. Insomnia of the Mummies (Messer Chups)
  7. Surf Dracula (The Apemen)

There are so many good songs it's hard to choose! Enjoy!

Yes, I think writing some tunes is on the cards. In previous guises I have written quite prolifically, but not so much surf rock.
Hoping to get a 24 song base together by the end of this month so we can start a slot at the local surfs bar/brewery in Kumeu.
Ghastly stomp = cool!

What do you lot think of our basic material thus far?

  • Malaguena (Trashmen/bambi molester)
  • Mr Moto ( the Belairs)
  • Jack the ripper (Link Wray)
  • Quiet surf (Richie Allen)
  • Pipeline (the Chantays)
  • Moon Dawg 65 (The Arrows)

Big +1 to all of these, especially Surf Dracula, which I just rediscovered this morning on the way to work.

If you can pull off Sea of Glory you're more punk than me.

Music is cultural and Surf is an idiom like folk or jazz where roots matter. Extensive recourse to chestnuts/classics shows a commendable living investment of contemporary players with our consciously-chosen antecedents in the idiom. As long as we interpret standards creatively and not play them slavishly, we're moving the art form forward and outward.

Squink Out!

I meant Sheep by Pink Floyd. That would make a great surf cover.

Let's surf outside the foam, and add a little East Coast

Married to a Mermaid - The Diamondheads
In the Shadows' Shadow - Reverb Galaxy
Rumors of Surf - Southern Culture on the Skids
Rio Sangre - The Derangers
Mir Rescue - The Space Cossacks

All very interesting melodic songs that will challenge the band in different directions. Then write 3 good originals, not filler. BTW take all the songs you play and make them your own! Cool

Best of luck!

Banzai Pipeline - The Astronauts (not to be confused with "Kuk" which is the vocal song - these two are often mistaken in song titling)
Surf Party - The Astronauts
Storm Surf - The Surfaris
Mar Gaya - Fender IV
Shake 'n' Stomp - Dick Dale

BTW, nice to see two The Cure songs...cool.

wow thanks guys! heaps of great suggestions. Band meeting/beer drinking tonight so will be sure to sit around and listen to a few of these.
Finding surf guitar has been the missing link for me. Couldnt work out why I was having such a hard time loving the amps, reverb tanks I was building and the type if guitars I adore. trying to match them to folk, rock and pop....then I found surf rock...

Keep something in your back pocket to chill things out a bit if someone wants to do that slow-dance/get-lucky/hooked-up thing. (I mean, there is alcohol involved...you might be her only shot.)
Not a specific suggestion but 'Slow Dance with a Fast Girl' kinda thing. (Yes, Aqua Velvets rock.) At least one in your pocket you can pull out.
