Here are two more in print comps not mentioned yet that I can highly recommend:
Phantom Guitars: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0013K6WJY/
An Outbreak of Twangin': http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001RL8X1Y/
Also, this style was not only about Britain as particularly France had several great bands in the genre as well.

Just listened to that Joe Meek compilation again, there's some great stuff on there....wonder how he got the reverb effects in those days? Any clues? Guess it was before reverb tanks were available in the UK.
Can't remember the details but he built his own reverb very early on. Here's a great book on the subject of Joe Meek's recording gear and techniques for anyone interested:
Joe Meek's Bold Techniques: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1931140081/
Btw, I guess we are the only surf band EVER to have a side project band dedicated to play ORIGINALS in the early 1960's euro-instro style...

I have this CD. Vampires, Cowboys, Spacemen and Spooks
One of my favourites on it is "Dance Legless Russian, Dance" by the Moontrekkers. Nice and weirs.
I've no idea why it is so highly priced here...

Hope I'm not missing the point of the post. Before they were the "Beatles" on June 22, 1961 (two days after my 1st birthday) the Fab Four recorded one of the best and earliest surf tunes around!
"Cry for a Shadow" is an instrumental rock piece recorded by the Beatles on 22 June 1961. They recorded the song at Friedrich-Ebert-Halle within the gymnasium, Hamburg-Harburg, Germany while they were performing as Tony Sheridan's backup band for a few tracks, under the moniker the Beat Brothers. It was written by George Harrison with John Lennon.
Cry for a shadow
Not missing the point. A great tune. I've heard a few Beatles tribute bands play it.

Thanks for the tip about the Joe Meek book Klas, I've not heard of that. I'll hunt a copy down.

From the description of the Joe Meeks Bold Techniques book:
Joe Meek was also responsible for many recording “firsts,” at least in the U.K. For example, he was:
• One of the first to experiment professionally with sound-on-sound overdubbing techniques (1951)
• The first to put microphones directly in front of and sometimes inside sound sources (1954)
• The first to intentionally overload preamplifier inputs and print “hot” signals to tape (1954)
• The first to use compressors and limiters aggressively in creative rather than corrective applications (1954)
• The first to build a compact spring reverb unit (1957)
• The first to “flange” sounds using two synchronized tape recorders (1958)
• The first to employ tape loops on commercial recordings (1959)
Looks like an interesting book. I wonder if it's a good read for the layman?

Anyone who has the slightest interest in vintage recording gear and techniques together with digging the Joe Meek sound will definitely enjoy the book.

The Phantom Guitars comp is really good. I found it at Amoeba records and have played some of the tracks on my NSSR show. I need to play some more.

Thanks for the videos Victor! It was interesting seeing the Moontrekkers. I'm a big Eagles fan also, but I don't think I have any of their stuff.

We all know the British were listening to American rock 'n' roll.
And a few American musicians were listening to the British musicians...

Here's another interesting compilation I recently purchased:
Various Artists - Instro Beat - 28 British Instrumentals Of The 60's, Legacy Records LSCD001
I bought it from this seller in Netherlands:
Instro4U
They have some amazing hard to find CDs...
