For years I have been exploring American surf music, primarily First Wave.
Lately I have also become enamored of pre-Beatles British instrumental beat music.
Am I the only fan of this music here, and the only one who hears many similarities?
I haven't seen this topic discussed in this forum. Any thoughts?
TIA,
Chris

There are several exceptional compilations that focus on late 50s-mid 60s instrumentals in the UK. Granted, there are a lot of the same tunes across these, but there are some obscure gems as well.
In addition to the above two fantastic titles, check out:
Telstars, Manhunts, Mexicans And Wonderful Lands (High Note, 2013)
Hank, Bruce, Bert, Joe, Big Jim & More (High Note, 2012)
Twanging, Honking, Plinking & Stomping (High Note, 2014)
Great British Instrumentals Of The '50s & '60s (One Day, 2015)
Great British Rock'n'Roll Instrumentals: Just About As Good As It Gets: Vol. 2 (2011)
Ku-Pow!: British Instrumental Guitar Music Of The Sixties (El, 2013)
— Insect Surfers
The Tikiyaki Orchestra
The Scimitars
Lords Of Atlantis
Fiberglass Jungle - Surf Radio

I know. And I couldn't go. I'm one of the resident sound guys at The Albert. I hope that Steve looked after you well.

We had a ball in the Albert, nice to visit Brighton as I haven't played there for a while...living down the coast in Hastings these days. A great place to be with bands like the Sine Waves and the Fratshack events. Seems like British surf, R&B and garage punk is doing well down here. Expect we'll cross paths at some point

Just listened to that Joe Meek compilation again, there's some great stuff on there....wonder how he got the reverb effects in those days? Any clues? Guess it was before reverb tanks were available in the UK. I used to pass the flat on Holloway Road everyday and looked up with an eerie feeling each time. Nothing changed there for years until one day I saw builders working on the place....the door was open and I wished I'd just walked in. But I didn't. If I had a rubber leg I'd kick myself in the butt
Telstar still sounds magical even theses days

These guys are a fantastic British instro band. Been going since the 80s.
Colin Pryce-Jones has been around even longer.

Come along to The Albert on December 12th for Endless Christmas with The Surfin' Lungs, The Sine Waves and The Squadron Leaders. Surf-tastic!

I've been trying to get my band to play There Are 8 Million Cossack Melodies and This Is One of Them - Group X as they were a local south London band.

Cool choices Gilette. Reminded me of this...Jet Hariis's 6 string bass could peel the paint off the wall!

The Shadows are indeed the gold standard. I do own a Hank Marvin tee shirt.
Joe Meek was very innovative - a pioneer, hero and sadly a tragic figure.
But like surf I find I often prefer some of the less-polished recordings.
Likewise many of the bands seem to have cut only a couple of sides.
I own many of the compilation CDs mentioned. I am always on the lookout
for collections of some of the less well-known bands and recordings.

Hope I'm not missing the point of the post. Before they were the "Beatles" on June 22, 1961 (two days after my 1st birthday) the Fab Four recorded one of the best and earliest surf tunes around!
"Cry for a Shadow" is an instrumental rock piece recorded by the Beatles on 22 June 1961. They recorded the song at Friedrich-Ebert-Halle within the gymnasium, Hamburg-Harburg, Germany while they were performing as Tony Sheridan's backup band for a few tracks, under the moniker the Beat Brothers. It was written by George Harrison with John Lennon.
