Does anyone know what happened to the surfrockmusic.com website - they wrote lots of great reviews, but it looks like the account for the website is suspended. I was just about to send some promos to them, but only want to if the site is still active. Would be a shame if it has gone away permanently.

I hope not, it's such a good site. We just sent them stuff last week. I emailed Duke from the site, but haven't heard back yet.

Duke passed away suddenly about three months ago.

That's terrible news! Thanks for letting us know Squid.

Oh my God, that's really awful! I'm so sorry to hear this. Duke's been around the surf scene for a long time. This is a real shock. Very, very sad.

That's terrible! Such a big supporter of the scene and ran a great site, with some of the most in-depth, enthusiastic reviews around. He'll be missed!

I tried to find it a couple of weeks ago as well...gone.

This happened to another forum, Birds And Moons dot com, a couple of years ago. BAM was somewhat dedicated to Paul Reed Smith guitars and gear, like the Fender Discussion Page. Folks on other forums like The Gear Page talked about it returning....it never made it back.

Brian can probably provide a better insight on these things.

Happy Sunsets!

bad news Sad

When you have to shoot ... shoot! Don't talk.

I'm not sure I follow...?

Sorry to hear about this. What was the source of this info Squid?

I'm sorry we didn't get to know Duke and the other reviewers on that site. As far as I know they never joined up here. I only traded a few emails with Duke and it was over a technical matter.

My condolences.

Brian,

What I was trying to say was that there is a lot of things that members do not understand about running an internet forum. You have more knowledge than the rest of us on what it takes to keep a forum like this up and running day after day. So, I was suggesting that you would offer an educated guess as to why surfrockmusic may have slipped under a wave. For me its always a sad day when a music forum closes.

Happy Sunsets!

Duke operated SurfRockMusic.com and supervised its contents. It seems that Duke was SurfRockMusic.com . That website resembled a magazine.

I saw Duke as a role model for motivating positive views. I regularly think about and appreciate the values of his approach about life in general, not just about music.

Duke and his work are not forgotten.

Oh man, thanks for letting us know, Squid. Really good site

Again, if you don't mind, how did you hear about his death Squid?

As to why the site went down, I have no idea but I can offer a guess which is probably correct: once he passed away he stopped paying for hosting, thus his web host closed the site. Eventually the domain name will expire and someone else will be able to purchase it.

There is what is called The Internet Archive.
This is a snapshot of the website at March 20, 2015

So perhaps his work will in some sense live on.

Last time I was there, there was a note that he had passed away saying something about not having anyone to take it over. I assume that they never found anyone that was willing to take it over. I would bet it stayed up until the ISP pulled the plug because they were not being paid. I think it underscores that anyone that runs an important online service should always have a backup person that knows whats going on with the underpinnings of the system, hardware...
What a bummer!

Thanks Guy.

At work we use the term "bus factor". So a "bus factor of 1" means that if 1 guy gets hit by a bus the project is doomed.

SG101 has a bus factor of 1 also.

From the next snapshot on the wayback machine

To Our Dear Friends, Associates and Beloved Music Fans,

On Sunday night our fearless leader, Duke, passed. At this time we don't know what will become of Surf Rock Music. We're hoping, perhaps, to keep it running, but don't know if we can. To everyone we've worked with, thank you for your never-ending support and caring - you are all amazing. To all who have visited Duke's brainchild, thank you more than we can express. He not only loved music, he loved all of you, as well.

As a final thought, Duke passed as he lived - the way he wanted. He fell asleep, looked around and spotted Gene Krupa and Albert King and thought, "Hey, I think I'll stay." And so he did. At this very moment we can imagine him hitting the ride right beside Gene and trading fours with Albert.

Rock on, Duke. We already miss you.

Yikes!!! Something you don't really think about, but unsettling when you do.

Don't you mean that the microsecond the domain expires, someone will squat on it?

Someone reminded me that we were still linking to surfrockmusic.com in our list of logos at the bottom of the page. I sadly removed the link and logo.
