Permalink Fender '63 Reverb Tank Issues

New Topic

I have a re-issue '63 Reverb tank that is not working properly. The issue is, the foot switch used to go between clean and reverb. Now all of a sudden the reverb side is not working. No matter what I try with the foot switch I only get a clean signal. Of coarse it could be a bad foot switch, but I'm not convinced...

Anyone ever lose the reverb side of this tank before? Tubes all look good.

First of all: do you get any reverb when you don't use the footswitch? If you don't get any effect signal without using the footswitch, it is most likely not a faulty footswitch.

So here's what you can do at home:

  • Did you unlock the reverb spring pan?

  • Check or replace the RCA connector cables.

  • Check and/or replace the tubes one by one.

  • Check and/or replace the pan.

  • Also inspect the inside of the pan. Some pans have pieces of foam on the inside to avoid spring movement when the lock is engaged. These foam pads sometimes crumble or fall off, blocking the springs.

I'd say it is either the pan or the tubes. Don't get fooled by tubes, they might be glowing, but they still can be defective. So check and replace all the tubes one-by-one and check the rca cable connection between the unit and the pan. If this won't help, try swapping the pan (always good to have a replacement anyhow...same goes for tubes). If it still fails - take it to a tech. Hope that helps.

another quick test: do you get a tank splash sound when you shake the reverb unit?
all else see above...
good luck

here comes the WEST SAMOA SURFER LEAGUE

Is the "L" bracket transport lock set against the reverb pan? if yes, unlock it and move it away.

For the foam pad that presses into the open face of the pan whilst using the transport lock - did this foam pad break away from the front panel of the units enclosure and now stuck on the pan? (the foam is there only during transport because it deadens spring vibrations to reduce wear and tear of the spring pan.)

Thanks for the replies...

Prior to posting, I did check the locking bar and did a splash test. The splash doesn't come thru the amp, but you can hear them bounce around if you put your ear close to it.

I'll find a tube tester and double check the RCA's next.

I had a '63 RI tank one time and had the same issue. I took it to a tech who said the reverb transformer died. Once that was replaced everything was working again. Could be anything really from a bad tube, to a soldered wired that lifted, dead transformer, dead pan, bad cords, etc --- If you've reached your skill and patience capacity take it to a tech could be money well spent.

Try your preamp tubes in your guitar amp as a quicky tube tester.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?
