The Ventures hit is crucial._ But because it came before the label surf doesn't discount it as a surf song. The same issue lies with Black Sabbath, The Sex Pistols, and Bauhaus. All three existed before the labels Heavy Metal, Punk and Gothic were placed on them. The music comes first then the label.

And the Ramones predated the Sex Pistols by a full year. Yes, we will do this about any genre and all the myriad labels affixed to to everything in the universe. But...Ramones first.

I still think it's a weird band to bring up along with the Belairs and DD.

I assume many of us know this song - if not from the surf age nuggets comp - from carlos' well-received compilation on youtube...

And Iggy & the Stooges pre-date the Ramones! That's precisely why you can't say anyone "invited" a sound or genre. There's always someone who did it before.

Of course but I thought we were addressing the whole labeling mish-mash. I think the Stooges end up as proto-punk along with The NY Dolls and now we segue into Glam. My real point was Ramones before Pistols.

Yeah, I totally get it. But I always hesitate labeling anything as first because it's not that clear cut. We're getting sidetracked here but this does illustrate the problem of saying someone is first in any genre. I'm a huge Sex Pistols and Ramones fan. I starting playing Rock & Roll primarily because of The Ramones. But because they started their band roughly a year before the Pistols doesn't mean they influenced them or what was going on in England. They were both labeled Punk by the press. Their worlds and bands were unfolding simultaneously. The Ramones were influenced by The Stooges, MC5 and 60's bubblegum and Garage Punk, whereas in the Pistols Glen Matlock's influence was The Small Faces and Steve Jones was Johnny Thunders and Roxy Music.

Nice summation. My final comment: You know one of the absolute coolest things about SG 101? You can actually 'talk' to band members from the band that you bought an album from just this past month. BTW: RPM is BOSS!

We now return this thread to whatever the hell it was before we hijacked it. Thread Hijack
