Ok, of course it has one, but Texas is seldom thought of in those terms... I wanted to write something i could "twang" on and, ..well, this happened... Sometimes I get very little say in what direction a song will go.. this one went several... so, if Texas had surf tunes.. maybe this is what they would sound like... Crank it!

I was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas for 6 months back in 1995. I knew I'd be close to the water so I brought my board with me (this was back when I was still surfing pretty regularly). And I'm glad I did.
I'd head out to Bob Hall Pier or to the jettys on Padre Island in the mornings. On a typical day, I'd arrive and then sit in my car (with about 10-20 other surfers in their cars doing the same thing) watching flat water until the wind would shift (sometimes it wouldn't) and some choppy little 2-3 footers would come in. You'd see us all run in, catch a couple crappy waves, then the wind would shift and blow it all flat again. We'd leave and then head home to get ready for work, smiling for the huge blessing of small crappy wind chop waves. It was so different from the SoCal surf scene, which had surfable waves constantly available. In Texas, we had to wait. We had to actually "pray for surf", not just wear T-shirts with that slogan. Then add in the oil spills that are common in the gulf and sharks and jelly fish, and I quickly realized that the small surfing community in Corpus was an absolutely dedicated one. Plus very friendly! No local-only douchebaggery. No over-crowding. Just a group of guys trying to surf anything they could whenever they could.
This was in the late spring and summer of 1995, so not long after Pulp Fiction came out. In fact, it was still being shown in the discount $2-$5 theaters. The soundtrack was always in my car at the time, as were the other surf comps and Del-Fi re-issues that were starting to come out. So, to me, Texas surfing and surf music aren't much of a stretch at all. In fact, it is nearly synonymous. Of course there wasn't a surf music scene there at the time (there probably still isn't one). But the vibe is there.
So write some good Texas Surf tunes!!! Maybe some guys will listen to them while they wait for waves in the early morning at Bob Hall Pier
