It was supposed to be the opener of the Surfin' Wednesdays at the Baja
Cantina at Marina Del Rey. However, someone failed to call Jaimie or
Tony and inform them that the restuarant was closed (Health Dept).
Luckily, and by some creativeness on J.R.'s part, the gig got moved to
the Purple Orchid, which is a cozy tiki bar in El Segundo. The Purple
Orchid has a lot going for it: cooperative hosts, great bar, pool tables and
a cozy atmosphere with tikis everywhere. Two things we discovered
that need some help in the future: a larger stage and food service, even
if it's just sandwiches. We were made to feel at home by the folks there
and it made up for the difference. We all got fed at outside places (don't
go the the Italian place next door--very pricey and they don't like to give
separate bills!)
The band set up to a very small crowd for fans that managed to make it
down to the club. If nothing else is said about this band, they have to
be the premier trad surf band in S. Cal. These guys work doubly hard
to portray the sound of the Sixtys today. All tunes were covers but
tunes you don't always hear. How 'bout the Ghastly Stomp, the Victor,
Exotica, and songs we have heard such as Malaguena, Mr. Moto, Squad
Car, Surf Rider, Hammerhead and Diamond Head. There were more
but yours truly was taking photos and putting down the butterflies. More
about that later.
Besides listening to great music by a great band. we had the pleasure
of having a few guests play with the band, kinda like the New Outer
Wave "Drifters". Dave Wronski drove all the way to Marina Del Rey to
hear this band and celebrate Tiki Tena's and Adrien's birthdays. Soooo,
someone convinced him to play. And he did. He ripped through 4
songs and the fans wanted more. It looked like he really had fun. Back
to the butterflies: The photog was graciously given the chance to do more
than take photos. Complete with butterflies and guitar, the photog played
the rhythm guitar to Mr. Moto and Squad Car. And to the surprize to the
fans (including photog's wife) it worked. To me, it was the highlight of the
evening to be able to play with such a great band. There's nothing like
playing through a Dual Showman!!!! Thank you, Guys!!!!!!
Adrien played drums while Dave played and there were two guest bass
players: Big Tiki Dude and John Paul. The secret's out: There are some
of closet players out there.
The Outer Wave played for about 3 hours with a break so we could
honor our birthday people and EAT CAKE!!!!

Rich,
link doesnt work, and when you post photos why dont you do them in the same thread where the show is announced and talked about before and after, instead of starting a new thread, I'm sure all would like that.
Just a suggestion.

I'm gonna put it in Tony's announcement of the Baja Cantina show thread also.

Hey Dude. I found that both of our links worked.
Computer SNAFU? There's pros and cons either
way about how to list this stuff. I just don't want it
to get buried in a past thread. Thanks for the
thoughts, though.

Rich if you were to post your photos to a old thread it bumps it back up to the top. and everytime somebody responded to the photos it would keep it at the top.
and you could e-mail or PM the original poster of the thread to change the title to include that photos were included.
just trying to help.

Rich, that's the way Clint takes care of his play lists. Have one thread just for photo links. Everytime you have a new link, you can bump it back up!
Anyway, I'll work on uploading pics. I haven't done ANY. I'm too busy these days.

Hey Tena, Thanks for the great shots. I'm going to have to wear a hat
e.g. baseball cap backwards, to keep the light reflection down!! Anyway,
great photos. Thanks for including them and contributing to the gig.
Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
