Permalink Messina's Jesters - Geiniec's Showmen/Majestics

I am the new guy on the block-but old in years. I just returned to California after living in Guam for the past 40 years.

Anyway, I grew up in Colton, CA so when I saw this site advertising Jim Messina's Jesters, my eyes popped open wide.

Growing up in the early 60's in San Berdoo there were only a handful of bands from the area that drew big crowds to dances such as the uptown Y in Berdoo, the CYA in Colton, and the Armory and American Legion in Riverside and to mind comes Jim Messina's Jesters from Colton, Roly Sander's Tornadoes from Redlands and Joey Geinice's Showmen and Majestics from Riverside.

I remember riding my bike to Liers in 1962 to buy their records which had airplay on KMEN and KFXM, a couple local radio stations.

Although Sanders was a pretty good guitar player and covered the Fireballs and Ventures material, Jim and Joey spent their time copying Dick Dales tunes and licks to the max. Because Jim and Joe were competitors, I recall they both played through Showman amps and their Strats were painted pearl white. It was amusing to watch both of them try to outplay each other - Jim learned to play the trumpet and sax so he could copy Dick's Lonely Bull and Honky Ton while Joey turned his strings upside down like Dale so if Jim came to a dance, or any other player who wanted to sit in, they could not play Joe's guitar. That was funny to watch the expression on the players faces trying to play a guitar with the strings upside down. Joey did that to me when he knew I had my eyes on the same girl he was interested in. I looked like a fool trying to play Walk Don't Run.

I was hoping that Jim was actually performing at your event, but now I see the band is only playing a tribute to the Jesters.

Has anyone run into Joey on this site? Does anyone know if he still plays? The last time I ran into him was shortly before I left CA in the mid 70's. We had recently returned from Nam and I remember he joined the Border Patrol and would play bass with Dale up by March Air Force Base.

How time flies by. It is nice to reminisce about a fun time in my life.

I just may ask my bro to attend the show to hear how good the tribute band pays homage to Jimmy's Jesters.

An invite has been extended to Jim Messina to attend.
We shall see.

Joe Gieniec is SurfBeat on this site, I believe that's who you are talking about.

Hi Mike! Welcome to the site.

Has anyone run into Joey on this site?

I think Joey is a member of this site. His username is SurfBeat.

It's also interesting that you are posting from the same IP address that SurfBeat has used, so perhaps he is nearby?

It's funny, but your post sounds exactly like something Joey would write, it's almost as if you were the same person. He has posted here recently but few can seem to recall his band The Showmen. No doubt there is some confusion with the name since it is so similar to Eddie & the Showmen. He goes by SurfBeat on this site, a search will find him for you. Don't mention Silver Face reverb tanks.

Loving this thread right now.

Bwahaha. I thought that writing style looked kinda suspect.

His band may have been noted as "Showmen" on posters and the like, but on their only single release that I'm aware of (SAM 114), it was SHO-MEN. Check my book, "The Illustrated Discography of Surf Music, 1961-1965."

Quoting this to save it for posterity.

Twisted Evil ROTFL Big Grin

I think Joey has posted that the SHO-MEN name on the single was a typo by a secretary and they had to go with it. They were called the Majestics before becoming the Showmen so he's using the Showmen/Majestics.

Said in my best Ricky Ricardo impersonation,
Hey Joey, you got some splaining to do.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Take it as a compliment fellow SG101'ers, that he'd go to so much trouble to do this. He must think very highly of us and our opinions to court us so.
