Permalink Cruel Sea Chorus

I'm having some troubles working out the chorus to "cruel sea" by the ventures. I have a feeling I am over complicating it.

Is it played as single notes or double-stops?

Anyone have any playing tips for this part?

"The Cruel Sea" was written by Mike Maxfield, guitarist for The Dakotas, and first released in the UK on the Parlaphone label in 1963.
The Ventures version from their album 'Surfing' is a near copy except for the difference in Nokie and Mike's styles but to me, The Ventures version is more of "our" surf style. It just feels like a surf tune to me even without the tank reverb.
Maybe listen to them both and then just "feel" it. There's also a video of The Ventures playing it 'live' in Japan in 1965....maybe you can pick something up there too and don't forget Ferenc's version from Polo Del Mar! Good luck. GREAT TUNE!!

Good luck with the tune it's a great song. Just thought I'd post some videos of various version, including one by several SG101'ers, El Mirage.

Thanks Brian...I should have done that.
The Ventures in Japan is fast man!! I think I saw Nokie crack a smile at 1:00 or so.....The Dakotas tempo is up there too. Sounds like they're just double pickin it like the theme from Bonanza.

I think Ron has it (just feel it), 'cause it seems there are lots of ways to play this. Some old wrist issues don't allow me to do alot of staccato picking so when I first learned it, I just arpeggiated the supporting chord formations in the chorus and played with different fingerings to get the vibe of the song.

Aside: Ron is Blue Avalanche going to be re-released or is it available somewhere? Saw it listed here, but out of stock

Hey Waimea Bay, I was going to make a video for you, but it wouldn't be any better than this guy. (Also, I have been playing it wrong for so many years, I can't go back.)

Thanks Ron! Snagged it at DWM.
I'll try to remember to "think Aloha" when it's February up here.

thanks for all the replies brothers. There's a lot to digest here.

That video is awesome pollo. That might help me a bit (we'll see lol). I got a lot of work to do tonight, so tomorrow it will have to be before I am on my jag.
