This guy... Rimshot

I am now playing trumpet with Prince Buster tribute band 'Balzac'

Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta

Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party

Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF

Hard choice.
Here is my top 5

Ted Pilgrim(Stan's band)
Dusty Watson(slacktone,Nightriders,etc etc)
Jeff Utterback(insect surfers,20 other bands)
Duff Paulson(Torquays etc.)
Jeremy(pollo del mar)

Jeff(bigtikidude)

The gent from the Lively Ones. Always have loved his style.

Dusty Watson (slacktone)
Jovana (Threesome)

Norm, Ted, Tim F, Duff, and Sticks also come to mind. But Dusty and Jovsna are the King & Queen of surf drummers, IMO.

Shit, how did I forget Jovana?

And yeah Tim Fitzpatrick from Lively Ones and Dynotones is great too.
Very jazzy

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Last years Surfer Joe Festivals showed a lot of great drummers. My favorite drummers beside Jovana and Dusty Watson were Boris (Bang! Mustang)and Bart Rousseau (Fifty Foot Combo). Besides them were others who are really worth to be mentioned -
Tim Stephenson of The Pyronauts,
El Ray's El Fuente is a great drummer
not to forget Lorenzo is a great drummer,
Niels of The Phantom Four too.

Here's a video of a drum duo

Does Mel Taylor from the Ventures count?

This is a strange and difficult question. Strange because i think that drummers on surf music HAS to be very good, otherwise the music seems without power and nerve.
Difficult becasue i haven't seen most of the "Americans" live.

But i can vote with confidence for EL FUENTE (EL RAY), NEILS (PH4), PIETER (LOS VENTURAS) and ANDRE (LES AGAMEMNONZ). I think the last two ones are teaching too?

see you....

It's all opinion, of course, but to me it's Dusty, then everyone else.

Agree with most mentioned, though some I haven't heard much of (but will soon!) and was going to mention Dane Carter as well but Brian beat me to it. Ted P. is the drummer I most aspire to be. I love what Dusty does, but I know I'll never play like that. Maybe a bad analogy, but to me Ted is to Dusty like Ringo is to Bonham. Maybe Jovanna is the Ginger Baker of the group, and Tim F is the Buddy Rich (but much nicer to his bandmates, I hope), LOL. Love hearing them all.

My top 5:
Dusty W.
Ted P.
Tim F.
Jovanna
Dane C.

I love watching Tim play (lefty on a right handed kit):

As Ukay54 said, Tim Stephenson of the Pyronauts is also pretty awesome. He is one of the surf drum teachers at Sierra Surf Music Camp and has a Masters in Music and is an all around awesome musician! Plus a heck of a nice guy too

And I cant believe I forget Joren "El Fuerte" from El Ray. He is definitely up there in the pantheon of current surf drummers!

Tim Fitzpatrick is definitely one of my favorites. I would agree with the Ventures guy too, but I know what BTD would say....

He's often lost behind Ivan, Mark and Catherine, but my vote goes to Doug Hoekstra of the Space Cossacks. Tight, hits hard and when playing live has an incredible ability to bring the drum volume up and down like he is slowly turning a dial. Seeing him live with the Cossacks and with his side project Jumpin' Jupiter made me a believer. Cool

Ha! What would BTD say?
Like what would Jesus do.
And now that Jp posted, I'm reminded,
Don of the Exotics is awesome as well.

I too am partial to Don's drumming, but that is kind of like voting for yourself. Really there are a lot of great surf drummers out there. I also got to play with Pete Curry and the Outtasites this past New Years Eve and that was a treat. We did a bunch of instrumentals and he was a blast to play with. Definitely a different drumming style than I am used to.

Yes!!

Richard Delvey too!

Of course, this could be Hal Blaine playing on this track for all I know?
But, another great surf drummer anyway!

That's Hal Blaine on "K-39." Richard Delvy is on all of the tracks for The Challengers' 1st album.
