Just saw a pair of JBL D140R's listed on the local Craigslist. I've never heard of the R, just the F.
Is it a surf worthy speaker?

From my light reading it appears that 'R' is for Rogers Organ, just as 'S' was for Sunn Amps. Several companies were getting their speakers from JBL and didn't want the 'F' (for Fender) on their OEM speakers they were putting in their gear. I imagine they would work just fine. —Wes DISCLAIMER: The above is opinion/suggestion only & should not be used for mission planning/navigation, tweaking of instruments, beverage selection, or wardrobe choices. |

I thought I read in Wheeler's Fender amp book (or in some similar source) that it's a common misconception that the 'F' stands for Fender? Anyway, here's the link if anyone is interested in contacting the seller. I'm not too hip on the 'tone' of his ad, but they sure look like nice speakers. |

Don't have Wheeler's amp book (just his Strat book) but was just looking last night (and now) into Richard Smith's comprehensive history (for which Wheeler wrote the Foreword) and on pg. 199 he states specifically that the D130 et al were redesignated D130F etc. to indicate in inventory the special request made by Leo to strengthen the speaker. (Dick Dale didn't "invent" the 'F' speakers but certainly did have input because he & others were the ones shredding the cone & melting voice coils.) Apparently Leo trusted his musicians & his ear & that wasn't the first time he took a speaker supplier to task. There was (according to Smith's work) a period where there were Jensens, then Oxfords, then Jensens that represent his voting with his wallet for awhile when they refused to make one to his specs. Then he went back to them when they woke up & did it the way he thought it should be. How marvelous for those musicians who knew him personally as he seems to really have been quite their advocate and didn't want junk in stuff on stage with his name on it. Smith's history is quite the read. —Wes DISCLAIMER: The above is opinion/suggestion only & should not be used for mission planning/navigation, tweaking of instruments, beverage selection, or wardrobe choices. |
