Another one I just ran across, I had never heard of these guys before but they're great!!!

The Cave Dwellers from Chicago

Never heard of the Cave Dwellers before either, but I've always thought the Cove Dwellers would be a decent name for a surf band. Loving this thread.

The Cave Dwellers appear to be current band and not a group from the 60's. The wigs are a dead giveaway for otherwise classic garage shtick.

It's the Sonny Bono in '65 look...

The Beach Boys PET SOUNDS promo film from '66 has them all wearing cool DON POST monster masks, including the classic "Uncle Creepy" mask! I've also seen a live pic from '64 of Mike Love in a Frankenstein mask signing Monster Mash.

Some screen grabs...

I kinda thought that too at first, but there are several articles about them on the web, including this one which shows a picture of their frontman Gary Goldberg now.

Killers from Space

That's wild! Maybe they were wearing wigs back then!!! I thought I owned practically every Garage comp there is, but I guess there's bound to more from that era to be dug up!

The Secret History of The Cave Dwellers

EDIT: I was able to find their track "Run Around" on Vol 8 of BACK FROM THE GRAVE by it's listed as Cavedwellers. No pic.

Did a search and found this pretty funny...

"We Were Duped: Cave Dwellers Never Opened for The Beatles. Front man's former band mates call him out publicly on his lie".

I can't help but think Sutch was influenced by Theatre Grand Guignol which had a late incarnation in London.

Indeed!!! Here's a super cool promo clip of Screaming Lord Sutch doing his 1963 hit "Jack the Ripper"!

Squink Out!

No doubt! That and the gothic Hammer Horror films which were made in England and very popular at the time.

Great thread! Yeah the earliest I can think of would be Screamin' Jay Hawkins & The Phantom, both mentioned earlier.

Joe Meek's studio band The Outlaws were sporting their western themed outfits in 1961. Not sure if you'd consider them "costumes" but since it was a gimmick of sorts I think it applies.
