Permalink Easy to play tunes

So, a friend of mine who is a relative beginner at guitar asked me to recommend her some surf tunes that are very easy to play. Do any of you have any personal suggestions? What are the easiest tunes that you know how to play?

Easy. Teen Beat by Sandy Nelson. Smile

Assume that her drummer is going to be a beginner, too.

Out of limits and Penetration are a couple of good beginner songs.

Pipeline is very easy, Wipe Out is the easiest song ever(in a bad way).

How is your friend learning the songs? Tab, ear, teacher?

I'm a big fan of Pintor, basically just arpeggios in the main line.

Edit.. well maybe not arpeggios, but melodies built around standard chord shapes.

I was thinking along the same lines as Danny. Surf Rider and Latinia are a couple of songs that use a lot of arpeggios out of basic major/minor/7th chord shapes...something that is used in lots of surf tunes. Even if a beginner can't do the whole thing, they are full of useful bits and pieces to add to one's repertoire. Malaguena is another in a similar vein.

+1 for Surf Rider.
I found just about all surf songs difficult when I first started to learn surf, and that was after 15 years of playing guitar!

The easiest songs to play are ones that you've written yourself.

Los Fantasticos

I noticed a recent upload of backing tracks to the Hearse. It doesn't get much easier than that song...

Not necessarily Sigh

Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin)
"Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms!
"Chaos at the Lobster Lounge" available as LP and download on Surf Cookie Records!

Surf Drums? a Lively Ones cover of a Link Wray tune. I put the question mark because my CD has a dodgy track listing.

Yep, I've got some difficult ones. Precision...

IMO, a combination of learning by ear and by notation/tab is a great foundation for 'pop/rock' guitar.
Not all classic surf/intro tunes can be found in a tab book, so I would recommend finding some examples that are well tabbed and let the learner choose which ones have the most appeal. For a guitarist just starting out, one of the coolest things is having some choice and being able to go at their own pace.

I agree.
Some of our most challenging songs are pieces we've written and most of the easier ones are covers.

I'm slowly building a collection of Learn Guitar and Learn Electric Bass With The Ventures. The newest ones are on CD from Hal Leonard, and come with backing tracks that can be slowed down. The charts are very easy to read.

The older ones on vinyl come with instruction books and can be harder to find in good condition, but they're around. I've got the first two so far, plus the bass record/book.

Hal Leonard does have some decent surf music books.

Here are some search results.

As Itzhak Perlman always says, "You have to learn slow to play fast." Build up speed after accuracy, play often, and have fun.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Aaron, I've picked up a lot of good tips and tricks from Bruce Lindquist over on Youtube. He's got a lot of instructional videos and many of the lessons are for surf tunes.

I offered to help her if she needs it, but she'll mostly just be learning by ear.

I write tunes that I can't play. That's how I get better.
