I've been wondering if "Stomp" means anything musically for surf songs or if it's just a word often added at the end of a song title.
I figure it's related to the dance but after listening to a handful of songs with stomp in the title and I'm struggling to find a common denominator. Most seem to be more on the rock'n'roll side of things and often have a little unaccompanied twang riff at end of sections. So maybe there isn't much more to it than that.
All this to say... I have a song title pun with stomp in it and don't want to blow it!

Yeah, I'm aware it was a dance. Just wondering if it has any real meaning "music form" wise. Like if you write a "blues" it will probably be 12-bar sections using 1-4-5 chords. What is expected from a "stomp"? If anything specific.
Maybe I should of used the old thread as it was a reiteration of SpaceFargo's post.

Ok so here's something I've been wondering for a while: what constitutes a "stomp" in the musical sense? In some Phil Dirt review he claimed a song with "stomp" in the title was not in the "stomp style". What does this mean, exactly?

I obviously wasn't there but from what I have read the kids would do this "surfer's stomp" dance where they would stomp their feet in unison and make the floor shake. I don't think it had any requirements, they would just do it to any dance-able song. Lots of bands picked up on it and named various songs "___ Stomp" as a result.

John Blair's new book actually has the dance steps for it (pg. 54), as depicted on a flyer that was included in the Mar-Kets first album, with citations about songs that paid homage to the phenomenon. Most just tried to move around appropriately and, importantly, manage to stomp when everyone else did.

My favorite 'Stomp' song. 1:34 of musical bliss.

Thanks! That is a priceless piece of footage. Like a little short before the movie ala days gone by.

Simon, I have both of these Comps. And other Aussie stuff like Denvermen and I assume all old stuff from The Atlantics.

What is a stomp?
It`s a stomp when it stomps.
Every surf band needs its own stomp.

i wrote a song a few years ago titled, "Stomp". It wasn't until last month that i finally had a chance to play it with a band in front of people, and have them clap along. (The clapping is what brought me to title it so).

Awesome footage of the surf scene in Australia! Thanks for posting! Now, if only more of this kind of footage existed from the USA too!

I have tried the dance moves from the book. I failed spectacularly and scared the cat.
I also remember Django Deadman of this parish having the dance moves printed out at a gig of Deadman's Curve in the mid-90s.
