Just want to share some info with you guys:

Some of you may know that I had been a Flamenco guitar player for seven years before switching to Surf.

But what most unfamiliar people to Flamenco don't know is that a song has to be written in a certain structure with a certain beat in order to be called a Flamenco song.

My favorite structure was called "Tangos" , which is not to be confused with the latin dance.

What fascinated me when I moved to Surf is that the Surf beat is exactly identical to the Tangos beat.
Which can bring to interesting results, as the Flamenco guitarist Ben Woods shows in his CD "Surf Flamingo":

Mr. Moto
Surfriders

Enjoy,
Mark.

Thanks for posting these Mark. He does a great job on them. Do you have his CD?

Thanks for sharing. Very nice.

I always said that surf music is Flamenco guitar with an R&B beat, the early steel string guitars both electric and acoustic guitar were both call spanish guitar here in the USA

It's funny you bring his up now, Mark. Ten days ago Guitar World magazine sent out an email with a link to this article on Ben Woods and his flamenco-metal-shred approach: http://www.guitarworld.com/acoustic-nation-ben-woods-plays-flamenco-metal-tarantula-presented-guitar-salon-international I really like the Heavy Mellow CD of metal covers done flamenco style, so I checked out this story, and really enjoyed what I heard by Woods. I looked on Amazon, only to be amazed to see his new Surf Flamingo CD. I had to put it on the Wish List, as I've spent a bit too much money recently but was planning to pick it up soon. After seeing this thread, I decided to see if it's on Spotify, and sure enough it is - just checked out Penetration, Walk Don't Run, and now Sleepwalk, and I'm really impressed - I love it! I will definitely be picking up this CD as soon as I can. REALLY great stuff!

What I find funny is that this guy went from doing a flamenco-metal hybrid to a flamenco-surf hybrid - and both work really well!

Thanks, Mark!

IvanP , I really enjoyed your version of Almoraima buleria by Paco de Lucia you covered ! Great guitar work as always Ivan !!!
@ Mark2Bra
Agreed it is difficult to use a flamenco song in surf without keeping it's pure form . Tangos is a great example to use with the 4/4 time signature . Most surf bands will play a version of malaguena . Which is what the Monterreys do as well with some Sabicas thrown in ...
My favorite styles to play are bulerias , buleria al golpe , soleas ,alegrias ,rumbas ,fandangos ,fandango naturales ,malaguena ,farruca ,granadinas ,zambaras ,tangos ,tientos and a few others that I can't think of at the moment . I've been playing flamenco off and on since 1998 . I'm a student of flamenco and will always be so .

Ivan great cover indeed!

Bangbang , nice to see a Flamenco fellow here.

I always thought of Bulerias as the meat of flamenco , but liked Tangos for its more simple compass.

For the rest of the guys and girls, here's two flamenco form examples. Notice how the beat rhythm is similar to Surf drums in the second one :

Bulerias

Tangos

Cheers,
Mark.

Bra,
That is so cool! One of the first players Iknew who mentioned surf guitar was my buddy Steve Faulk, who builds flamenco guitars now in Japan (used to live in Oakland). Steve said (he was playing flamenco for a bunch of dancers at the time) if he was to get into any other style of guitar playing it would be surf. I was still playing horrible overdriven slop at the time and didn't really know how deep the connection between the two might be.

Lately, I have been playing around with Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" - trying to dumb selections of it down to a level I could play surf-wise. I know - it's classical musci, but it's pretty heavily influenced by flamenco. Julian Bream's recording from the 70s was one if the things that turned me onto guitar as a teenager.
