Permalink Thought experiment: If you could only play 2 chords, which would they be?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

If this seems silly just ignore. I like posing impossible unlikely scenarios. Don't worry, no one will hold you to this; you still get to play all the chords you can fret and yes, all 12 notes.

E minor
D

These 2 are my wheelhouse. My hands just naturally form them and they are the basis of much of my music which is very simple in construction. Add a 3rd chord and they can go in any direction. Fast slow and go go go.

A minor and E minor. A minor is my favorite chord and it's not even close. Big Grin

Am and G

G/C (G over C)
Em

Saddest progression ever.

E and F

I could live I think on E alone, it's right there at the top! And bottom too! F is just to break it up a little... If I wanna go totally nuts... Shock

Seriously though, E&F open up Byzantine scale and latin melodies - The Victor, Misirlou, Intruder, Malaguena... the list goes on forever. I would not like a world without it.

Though, everything can be trasnposed, I guess. But there's a certain feeling to certain root notes, and certainly with guitar, the voicing and position matter a lot.

  • I used the word certain 3 times in a sentence because my English sucks. Sorry.
  • I wrote that with all seriousness, in full consciousness, not meaning to offend anyone who proclaims connection, or any affiliation with any other chords.

Hardly. Smile

  • No minor chords were harmed during this thread.
  • Your mileage may vary.
  • Void where prohibited by law.

Am & E: E, just 'cause. Am also because. And a 1st position Am chord - on an amp I already know how to get a sound out of - is synonymous with "growl" and will tell me often if a bridge pickup sucks. Big Grin

Cadd9. Such a pretty sounding chord.

Second is probably Bmin, as it's the first barre chord I learned and one that is in a lot of what I'm playing these days.

Allow me to piggy-back on that E chord! It'll do.

+1 for E and F, for basically the same reasons

A Minor and E Minor..... an unstoppable duo....

I am not obsolete, I am RETRO.... Cool

I've got to go with the Rev on the D to E. They were the first two chords I learned to transition smoothly from one to the other learning Rumble.

Don't forget the "witch chords" a- & F. Basis of most of Stevie Nicks' catalogue. Also some surf tunes...

Squink Out!

Am and G

Shoot, one chord is enough: Dm: the saddest of all keys.
