As far as 60's-era surf goes, The New Dimensions are about as ripping as it gets... also highly recommend the album WAIKIKI SURF BATTLE, a totally wild, raw, bombastic whomper from start to finish -- for my money, the best surf album of all time!
Yeah, Waikiki Surf Battle is a great comp, that strangely doesn't get a lot of mention. The New Dimensions are in my top 5 of all time great surf bands. They too doesn't get mentioned that much.

Wait ... can't believe I omitted these obvious suggestions.
Category 1: Penetrators
Category 2: Monster Pete and the Chiefs
Of course, there are many superb trad bands that seemed to be excluded under the criteria. But I'm guessing the criteria will be expanded after exposure to additional material.
Category 3: Louie7 had a thread on fuzz.

Even though this thread is over 5 years old there are some really great leads in here for those just getting into the music. Hate to see threads like this get lost over time but appreciate all the valuable insight from those that posted.
