Just saw this come across my twitter feed.

RIP. Sad

I just saw it on facebook - sad.

I got to see him and Bob Spickard at the Deke Dickerson guitar geek in 2007 I think - seeing him nail that glissando on "Pipeline" again and again was really cool!

Very sad news. R.I.P. Brian.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Hard news indeed. RIP & prayers to kith & kin.

Being able to nail that is one of the hardest things I've done on guitar, and I still don't think I've got it right! :/ I've played "Pipeline" in every band I've ever been in, instrumental or not. Behind the Ventures, The Chantays and "Pipeline" are what got me into surf music in the first place. I think someone said it somewhere else on here, but it sucks to see all these "first generation" surf musicians pass away...

Cool

Fwd Email from Linda, ex of Surfing Museum.

Hey Jeff…Here’s a copy of what I sent to my email list…Can you put this on SG101 for me? I appreciate it…Also Bob Spickard will update me on further details regarding any memorial services when the family lets him know…Thanks Linda

Aloha Dear Friends…
As always I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I truly believe we need to pay homage to our wonderful musicians who have brought so much pleasure to us over the years…As most of you know The Chantays’ Brian Carmen has been valiantly fighting an ongoing battle with colon cancer for many years…I’m sorry to say he lost that battle last night but happy to say he won the war and his rightful place in God’s arms…Brian was one of those guys who was always cheerful despite whatever might be going on in his life…I was blessed to have known Brian and to have worked with him a couple of times during Surfin Sundays at HBISM….Brian is deeply loved and will be sorely missed…Rest in peace Dear Brian…God bless you…God bless your loved ones and God speed in healing the wounds brought on by this tremendous loss…As we move forward in life may we always think of Brian fondly and remember all the joy he brought into this world with his music and many talents…Much love dear Brian and to all of the wonderful musician friends and extended family we have been blessed to know through 10 years of Surfin’ Sundays and beyond…Mahalo a nui loa…Linda & John xo

Lost another great person, and a fine musician. Sad

Be careful following the masses. Sometimes the "M" is silent...........................

I can't think of anything I've heard in music that's left as indelible a mark on me as that opening glissando. When I was a little kid listening to my dad's cassette comps, that song, particularly that opening glissando, grabbed me and never let go. It's still one of the first things I do when I pick up a guitar, regardless of where I'm at or whether I'm plugged into anything. I like to think I get it right half the time.

'Vale' Brian Carman - the crackly, reverb drenched single of 'Pipeline' would have been one of the first records we had to tune me into surf music. Thoughts with family, bandmates and friends

So sad to hear this news.

My deepest condolences to his family, his friends and all of the fans of this musical pioneer. Thank you for the Glissando and musical history!

Rest In Peace Brian

Sigh. If heaven exists, it's been amassing a wonderful surf band lately. Talked to Bob Spickard last night, and he was understandably very emotional. We're losing too many of these guys! Vaya con Dios, Brian.

Very sorry to hear about this, may he RIP. Reventlos, I am convinced heaven does exist. I won't go into detail in this thread, but I will say Dr. William Lane Craig has strengthened my faith greatly.

Godspeed Mr. Carman.

This is very sad news indeed. Like many people, Pipeline did a number on me when I was a kid, and it subconsciously burrowed into my brain where it turned into a full on surf music infection later in life. That opening glissando is iconic; I wish there was a way to capture that sound in stone.

RIP.

The opening Glissanado of Pipeline IS the very embodiment of surf music for most people. RIP Brian and too all who knew him personally I am sorry for your loss.
