Who here uses a fuzz pedal in their set-up?
Which one sounds best to you?

For that proper spaghetti western/davie Allan fuzz, the Mosrite Fuzz-Rite is the way to go, but they have gotten quite expensive.

I use a Univox Super-Fuzz on a few songs, and it rocks. A really nasty squishy sounding fuzz, that has two completely different, unique sounds.

I have a Fulltone Ultimate Octave, and it sounds real nice too, as long as you keep the octave on. Their Soulbender is a good sounding fuzz too.

That little cheap plastic Guyatone (TZ-2?) sounds real good too, if you wanna cheap fuzz date.

Big Muffs sound cool on their own, but I couldn't ever get one to work in a surf context.

I have a verbafuzz (authentic raw scream, very 'green slime'-like, and a 2star soulbender, fwiw. the soulbender is great. one complaint is that it has an internal trimpot that lets you set the input gain which effects the fuzz transistors, intended to match the sb to yor guitars output. problem is it gives great sounds (raw to creamy) in multiuple settings, hence, that pot should have been on the outside afaic.

i don't use fuzz that much, but fuzzez are just so cool.

I also really like fuzz but don't use it for surf. I have the following 3, each one with a distinct different sound:

image
Maestro Fuzz-Tone (Reissue, early to mid 60s fuzz sound)

image
Fuzzbrite (Fuzzrite copy, mid to fairly late 60s fuzz sound)

Danelectro Grilled Cheese (Vintage fuzz sound on a budget)

I'm just now getting interested in the whole fuzz thing, and I just wanted to know about the Danelectro Grilled Cheese pedal. I don't want to spend too much right away, and I've noticed that they go for pretty cheap on eBay. Is that a good starting point? Also, is it a good pedal to use to get anywhere close to a Davie Allan sound?

Jon, if they still make 'em, I 'rather go for the verbafuzz if I were you - at only $80 it's just a way better built pedal with a more characteristic, traditional fuzz sound - I've only tried the dano in a stor ethough, so it might well not be fair comparison.

fwiw, i recently bought one of those behgringer twenty bucks pedals, the "tube overdive" - I 'm flabbergasted by how good it sounds. it has more of what i was looking for than anything yellow that says BOSS. (i.e. tube sounding overdive at slight settings, just an edge of cream. you might want to check if they have somnething fuzzy. do your online ressearch tho, cause I 'vbe heard those pedals vary in quality greatly.

I would say it's a good starting point if you are short of money but you won't get the Davie Allan sound out of it. However, you can get pretty close to a generic mid 60s fuzz guitar sound ("Satisfaction", "Psychotic Reaction" etc.).

I still reccomend one of those plastic Guyatone fuzz pedals. Cheap and nasty!

I like an occasional fuzz tune and the Ibanez FZ-7 is wicked and cheap. Got mine about 5 years ago for about $20 used.

i liked messing around with the dallas arbiter fuzz face aka: "the Jimi Hendrix fuzz face"...kind of a "down and dirty" sounding fuzz...

We have a Mosrite and a Yardbox in our arsenal.

Thanks a lot for the input, guys. This is really helping a lot. Does anyone know anything about the Boss FZ-3? I saw several of those on ebay, too, although I think they've been discontinued.

How does the ProCo Rat sound in the fuzz area? Oris is it more of a straight-up distortion pedal?

The Disasternauts

I got one of these and hope to debut it on our next album.

Sounds just like the Mosrite,

I was looking at those, but the ones on ebay are all $99; a little steep for now, but maybe I'll save up for one.

I've been looking at those. Any idea how close to the original Mosrite it sounds?

If it's close, it looks like a good deal for $99.

I just picked up the new Little Big Muff, a downsized version of the Big Muff, and Electro Harmonix claims it has the exact same circuit. Sure sounds like it. Great unit!

Laura's got the new double muff - totally wild, but the lack of tone knob makes it hard to combine with reverb tank, it's bit shrill SO I'd advice aganist it for a surf guiatrist. Unlike the verbafuzz which also has no tone knob, but doesn't give any shrillness problems.

It sounds pretty damn close. I want the Davie Allen/Ventures sound and this comes the closest so far. I've tried the Big Muff and Fuzzface and compared to those two this is much closer to the sound I desire.

I've got an original Mosrite Fuzzrite and of the early Sanner Fuzzrite reissues. I paid about $100 for the Sanner, but that was a number of years back. Both are VERY close in sound. Ed Sanner designed the original Fuzzrite. I actually spoke with him on the phone when I bought mine and he said that it was the exact circuit as the original. I'm not sure if they are still being made, but it is a great (and cheaper) alternative to an original Fuzzrite.

The Rat is the pedal that Davie Allan uses today, on his modern recordings. To my ears it's a bit more metalhead-ish than the '60s sound, but it takes his re-recorded versions of the '60s hits to a searing new level.

Check out any of Davie's CDs from the '90s or later (FUZZ FEST, LOUD LOOSE AND SAVAGE, LIVE RUN, ARROW DYNAMIC SOUNDS OF, RESTLESS IN L.A., etc.) for an unforgettable earful.

Oh, and for outright fun, check out the silly punk rock opera album he did with The Phantom Surfers, SKATERHATER.
