Permalink Psychobilly anyone...?

New Topic

I think 99% of psychobilly is shite. Death metal with upright bass, like some guys pointed out.

You should listen to some Meteors, try to get their instrumental album (i believe it is called "Mental Instrumentals" or something like that).

In psychobilly I like the old school bands better. Guana Batz, Batmobile, Frantic Flintstones, The MEteors, Demented are Go and so it goes...

The Meteors "Mental Instrumentals".Good Golly Miss Molly that album is like too damn good if you catch my drift. The guitar player P Paul Frenech is beyond amazing. He also has some solo albums with some tasty instro as well. The vocals actually have actually got me diggin' psychobilly again. He was also a member of the surf band The Surfin' Dead which everyone should do their damnedest to seek out their "Powertwang" album. The title doesn't disappoint.

Reverb, It's A Way Of Life!

Butch, did you join The Van Orsdels? I've gone back to check 'em out on myspace several times and dig it. There was a big psychobilly scene in Atlanta about ten years ago, but it kinda died. But I'll agree, there are a lot of those bands and and they're not all good.

The Mystery Men?
El Capitan and The Reluctant Sadists

Count me in the "I'd prefer rockabilly" crowd. That stuff was often much wilder than psychobilly was. I'm thinking songs like "Flying Saucer Rock & Roll" and "Ubangi Stomp"

Psychobilly seems so wrong in so many ways. Though I have never gotten close enough to find out what it even is, really. Be prepared to take acid and have long, colorful conversations about pomade, I guess. Is that what being in a psychobilly band is all about?

I'm on the fence with the whole "psychobilly" phenomemon. I mean, first, how is it defined? Are The Cramps "psychobilly" (I think they actually coined the term)? Is The Reverend Horton Heat? (Hell, they sound like plain ol' rockabilly to me.) Is Demented Are Go? I would say, yes, in my opinion, that's what psychobilly is.

Anyhoo, while we're on this topic, I saw Nashville Pussy open for The Rev quite a few years back. While they (NP) were certainly entertaining, I could not, for the life of me, figure out WHY people referred to THEM as pscyhobilly. I mean, their songs don't even remotely resemble rockabilly. They sounded more like a mix between Motorhead and AC/DC, but fronted by rednecks.

Oh well. Rolling Eyes

Is this something you can share with the rest of us, Amazing Larry?!?

I saw Nashville Pussy around 2000.
I read a blurb in the entertainment paper saying.
these guys make Southern Culture on the Skids,
sound like New Kids on the Block.
I gotta say I enjoyed the show, but I don't listen to the cd anymore.
and I would not call them rockabilly or Psychobilly.

and I much prefer, SCOTS now.

More than anything else, Nashville Pussy sounds like AC/DC getting blindsided by the short bus.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

and then drowning in a pool of Jack Daniels and Speed.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

More like treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and incompetent songwriting. The musical growth of that band cannot even be charted.

But that's nitpicking, isn't it?

I think the term "psychobilly" shows up in the classic Johnny Cash tune 'one piece at a time', gotta be circa 1976 or so. He refers to a "psychobilly cadillac"

You know, Danny, I believe you are correct. I think that's where The Cramps said they got the term "psychobilly"--from a Johnny Cash tune.
