Permalink A 'How to Play "Surf Rider" Video

New Topic

Several guitarists on various forums asked me to make a follow up to my "How to Play Walk Don't Run" video with one for "Surf Rider." Here 'tis...

-don

Still rockin' after all these years!

Well, my take on it anyhow. Closer to the well known Lively Ones' version than the Ventures. And even they, at least on some later live recordings/videos, seem to use Nokie's original Venture's triplet phrase.

Personally I love the simplicity of their original take on the song. Maybe because it is more "surfy" than 'spudnicky.' Wink

Thanks for doing this. More please. I hope everyone can start making videos like this, showing off how they approach surf music.

Thank you for sharing. Great video.

Yep - it's closer to Lively Ones version and it was the first I heard (Pulp fiction)))) so I like it better

Don, I think a lot of us wish you lived next door. Thanks and please keep this going!

Happy Sunsets!

Thanks for share!!! Great video.

Great demeanor and teaching style Don....the "Bob Ross" of Surf Guitar Smile

Thank you all for your kind and encouraging comments.

I first learned to play this music back in the early `60s when it was new. And then, as so often it seems happens in life, I "moved on." A career, family -- all that. And my musical focus moved on too. I forgot. Oh so sadly, I forgot for a time how truly great this music is. Fresh. New. Even now, all these years later.

Now retired and with the time to do whatever I want (Yea for that! Why did I have to wait so long!) Laughing I am having the total joy of rediscovery. And in doing so I have realized something that so many here already know: That this music is STILL fresh and new. And that it has an honesty found almost nowhere else.

So yes, that enthusiasm is there, and I suppose that it shows. I truly love this music! Love playing it. Love sharing it. And love seeing other players -- many with younger and more nimble fingers -- having that same enthusiasm and doing things with the music that I, today, can only dream about.

I do look forward to continuing this series. Sharing the things I learned over the years, and in turn listening to, and learning from, all of you.

Grazie!

I never thought about it in those terms, but it is a good description. You are right! And without me realizing it that is so for my approach to most surf. Languid waves more than crashing! Smile Thanks!

Don, it's funny your story is very similar to mine and I guess a lot of people on here. Ever since I retired 6 years ago I picked up playing guitar again and have soaked myself into it. Keep up the terrific videos! Looking forward to watching more. Cool
