Here's a few off the top of my head:

The Martian Denny Orchestra, Nashville, TN. - http://www.sundazed.com/shop/artists.php?artistID=455

The Doke Ohms, Nashville, TN. - http://www.reverbnation.com/thedokeohms

If you're going to include Chet you need to include Steve Wariner, Nashville, TN. - one of only 5 C.G.P.'s that Chet personally anointed.

The Blue Stingrays are definitely from Gainesville, FL.

Gravitron (sadly over) is actually from SC if I'm not mistaken.

The Mystery Men?
El Capitan and The Reluctant Sadists

But the Blue Stingrays live in California and the album was recored there, right?
I know the members are originally from Gainesville but never made this music there as The Blue Stingrays...........??

Just wondering

Jeff, true...I guess maybe it would be more accurate to classify them as a CA band?

Louisiana:
Unnaturals (I think that's what you mean instead of Unusuals) (active)
The Bills (active)
Rondo Hatton (active)
Spring Break Shark Attack (active)
Doctor A-Go-Go
Blood Urchin (active)

I think you accidentally said LA instead of AL for Jonny and the Shamen

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

Buddy and the Squids from Mississippi

Spring Break Shark Attack is an awesome band name.

There is certainly a Southern Surf Renaissance happening. I have touted it for some time. But I wonder if many that live elsewhere thought it was hyperbole? What is most amazing about this list is just how many are currently active.

The sheer scope of active Southern Surf bands is staggering. I knew there are an impressive number, but I didn't know there are this many.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

May want to also consider:

The Carvers - (Wilmington, NC)
The Thunderchiefs - (TX)

I agree, though if you want to see an unimpressive number try to make a list of southern surf groups in the 60s

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

Thanks everyone for the additions/corrections so far, keep 'em coming!

Noah, does Hematovore have any surfy material? When I saw them they just sounded like instrumental Maiden, which is not at all a bad thing by any means.

Hunter, you're the man. I was hoping you'd chime in on this thread.

The Squares - 1995-2002

Southern Surf Stomp!

Who knew the bible belt could put out such rad surf! I did live in the Myrtle Beach area from 81-84 so The Kahuna Kings has some tentacles but I was listening to a lot of Priest, Maiden and other British new wave metal back then.

The Kahuna Kings

i saw a two man band open for southern culture on the skids halloween night called 'deadly lo-fi'. they are from NC. they do some instros but mostly songs. they're interesting, very different, loud and very lo-fi. i loved them. one of them is/was a member of a surf band, the 'noseriders' i think.

Correct, and also a present member of The Carvers.
