Anybody tried this?
I might be picking one up, but am not certain it will give the right sound.
Thought I'd check here.

Currently my main amp is a Hot Rod DeVille 410. With a few simple mods and a tube swap they can sound pretty good. There's some helpful tips HERE. I also found some really good info online from a guy named Justin Holton but it seems it has since disappeared. Luckily I downloaded and saved everything for reference. Perhaps I could upload them to the Miscellaneous section of the Downloads here at SG101 if anyone is interested. I'll say that toning down the preamp section and replacing the crappy Groove Tube 6L6B's with a pair of Tung Sol 7581's made a world of difference. Bill S._______ Last edited: Oct 27, 2014 12:03:56 |

Did that amp come stock with 6L6Bs (not 6L6GC)? If it came with 6L6GCs then "B" should have not been substituted as they are rated for lower wattage and voltage handling and might actually burn up in a circuit meant for GC'c 7581s OTOH are rated for a slight bit higher wattage and voltage and would offer a bit more headroom (less distortion) but only a little. It's like putting hire MPH rated tires on your car and then not driving any faster to take advantage of it. |

I picked it up used at a local music shop and it had 6L6B's in it when I got it. I don't know if it came from the factory that way. I'd heard good things about 7581's so I thought I'd give 'em a try. It might be only a little bit more clean headroom but every little bit counts, right? True, a good pair of 6L6GC's would probably sound the same (or maybe better?) but I'm happy with the result. —Bill S._______ |

I played a HR Deville for a while and they can definitely surf. The reverb kinda sucks on them but you can always order a surfy bear fetverb kit and you will be set. —The Kahuna Kings https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Kahuna-Kings/459752090818447 |

I gigged with a Hot Rod DeVille 4/10 for two or three years. With a Fender RI tank it was very surfy! The only reason I don't still have it is because it got to be too heavy to lug around. Sounded really GREAT though. |

On a kind of related note, has anyone surfed on a Fender Blues Deluxe? I'm thinking of getting either a Blues Deluxe or a Hot Rod (112), unfortunately my local guitar stores don't have either so I've no way of comparing before buying one 2nd hand. I just don't want to end up sounding like SRV (not that that is likely with my playing ability). Thanks. |

I own that very amp and it sounds pretty darn good (much better in Paul's hands of course)! —https://www.facebook.com/lostremoleros/ Last edited: Oct 31, 2014 06:24:24 |
