we have a little commercial free, all volunteer radio station here where i live that plays an eclectic mix of genres. i've been volunteering with doing some of the daily programing on top of doing a surf music show once a week. all my surf music is now in the station library. anyway......what's cool with our music roulette playlist is that surf music seems to fit pretty well as a segue in and out of almost 100% of the tunes that play. this makes me happy.

Thats cool.
When its a mix, is that a DJ playing the mix, or just a computer picking them randomly?

the computer shuffles and picks the mix and then a 'dj' goes back in and tidies the song selection up. i tidy it up a lot because some of the picks suck (sorry joan baez lovers) but i add a lot more rock than it picks. it's on its way to being a cool station though.

Computors weren't running the programs when I was in radio back in the late 70's. We were spinning records and running cart machines while announcing. We were always 5 to 15 minutes ahead of the show. Does the computer make the gig easier?? Or did I just learn to run a show different?? And we didn't have surf to play!!!

zzero, i'm new to all this radio stuff. the computer makes it easy for me. i put all the tunes for a show in a playlist in my itunes, copy it on a thumb drive and load it into the station's computer library. i then load it into my allotted time slot and arrange it the way i want it. at the station i record all my 'talk' and plug it into the appropriate places. i talk, but not much.

Sounds a bit easier than what we did. We were in constant motion--record rotation, loading pre-taped shows, meter readings, taking phone calls, running to the AP machine. Show production on the run. It could get hectic, but it was commercial radio. Actually it was fun!
Great getting to play surf on your show!! We played country--not my cup of tea..
Enjoy your show! I envy you! Good luck!
