Permalink Drum programming trick (convert audio to midi)

New Topic

Hello all, I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds programming drums really tedious. Drums loops are great but aren't really flexible. Just found a pretty neat trick for programming surf drums for demos and songwriting.

Uses Ableton Live audio-midi feature but I bet alot of DAWs have this feature.

Using the Steve's Springy Surf Drum loops and wished I could modify the beats like add/remove a few hits. There's an option in Ableton Live "Convert Drums to Midi Track" that converts drum AUDIO into MIDI (i think it detects low/mid/high transients and coverts them to kick/snare/cymbals).

You can then take your new MIDI clip and send it to a drum machine. You have to tweak some hits (it's not perfect!) but the human feel remains intake. Then you can shift the hits onto other pieces. You move all the rides to the toms or add/remove a snare hit here and there. Before long you'll have a full MIDI library of surf beats and fills.

Hope someone can find use for this.
