I have heard a lot of versions of this I've never heard before in this thread, which is awesome (especially The Eagles), but The Chantays original is transcendent. It will always be in my top ten favorite songs of all time, period. —The Mystery Men? |

It must give the guys in the Chantays a thrill to see how many different covers of their tune have been created over the years. the number one for me is and will always be the chantays version. i still remember the first time i heard it when i was about 9 years old, on a family vacation in new england, coming out of the juke box while i was standing with my dad waiting to pay for our dinner. the many other versions are all good too and i know some people don't like it, but i like the stevie raye vaughan/dick dale version also. — |

I agree about the original. Those kids really nailed it. A real marvel when you think about it--something so evocative with such subtle dynamics right out of the gate like that. I have an alternate of Pipeline on an early copy of Surf Legend and Rumors, that is missing from the later release of that comp. The tape was discovered on a shelf in the back of Wenzel's record shop in Downey, where Pipeline was recorded. |
